The collectors are known as “sneakerheads” — an obscure group that fixates on fashion-forward footwear.

“It’s an obsession,” said Kris Schuster, a North Side sushi chef who figures he spends $200 to $500 a month on shoes.

“(Nike) calls us a week before a shoe comes out and says, ‘You’re either in or out on this,’ and you tell them that day,” said Chris Davis, co-owner of Sole Classics, a Short North sneaker boutique that opened in June 2006.

“In some parts of the country, it (a new release) can literally start a frenzy,” said Aaron Conroy, the shop’s other owner.

  • I have seen some collections online in the various toy forums and it is crazy stuff. Nice article.

  • Hey Walker thanks for posting that.

It’s always nice to get recognized by a publication that gets seen by as many people as the Dispatch, so we (Sole Classics) were pretty excited to be included in that article.

If anybody hasn’t been in before, I encourage you to stop in and introduce yourself if you are in the neighborhood (Short North). To those of you that have been in/shopped with us, thanks for the support!

  • and I thought I had problems with shoes…I have over 100 pairs but only about 10 pairs are tennis shoes and I definitely don’t spend $200-$500 a month on them. Anyone else here have this problem? or with something else they collect clothing wise such as jeans?

  • I have bought 6 new pairs of shoes in the last month or 2.

I also am a fan of vinyl toy’s.

    so i guess i have problems, addiction…

which you can pick up at rivet, if you have’nt been in. I suggest you stop by, laura and scott are some kool kidz, stop by and chat with them they have comfortable chairs, its at 1200 n. high st. next door to monkey’s retreat bookstore right before 5th ave.

  • Suits. Definitely a bad habit to get into. Even buying two a year can put a serious hurt on your bottom line.

  • For me it is CDs and books. I own over 2000 albums and at least 500 books. Sometimes I think that I am a bit of an idiot for spending all of my money on this stuff. But then again, I could be spending my money on much worse things. And these are the things that bring me the most joy in life. So, oh well.

Also, I still entertain fantasies of being able to afford a place that has an extra room that I can turn into my personal library/study. So I figure I’m just working towards that. :D

  • I nice little write up. It does kind of prove how behind the times we are around here. The sneaker and vinyl toy craze started years ago and while still pseudo in their respective primes. It will be nice if Columbus can get on board of the current trends before they are already history in major cities. WIth that said I am very glad that we can support this kind of store here with decent sucess.

Stores like Rivet, Industry Standard, and Sole Classics also take a role in supporting local artists that fall within the styles of these trends and help the community become more culturally aware. So hats off to the people that sacrifice so much time and money to provide these environments in Columbus.

  • I prefer to buy sneakers when I’m out of town, that way I feel I’m getting something unique and it doesn’t bother me as much to spend cash when traveling. Whether or not the kicks are unique is up for questions though and money is money.

    I need a new pair.

  • What about Status? I believe they have supported a lot of Columbus based Artists also!

  • Picked up a awesome pair of Nike’s over the weekend in Fort Worth. Whoozzzaa.

  • What are they? Was that at Motive807?

  • 6.0 oncores white/black/lime green swoosh/slate blue accents, bought at Zumiez…never seen this color combo…I guess they’re all limited.

  • his shoe addiction is breaking our family apart…

  • How’d you get out of the basement damn it, pick the lock on those handcuffs again?
