Skybus applies for international flights

After generating nationwide buzz with its $10 cross-country fares, ultra low-cost carrier Skybus is apparently ready to test its formula on international flights.
The Columbus, Ohio-based carrier has applied to the Department of Transportation for the permission to begin flights to both Mexico and the Bahamas. In one of its federal filings (PDF file), Skybus says it “plans to operate nonstop scheduled air service six days a week (Monday through Saturday) between Columbus and Nassau [in the Bahamas], and between Columbus and Cancun, commencing on or about October 1, 2007.
Skybus will be the only airline offering regularly scheduled non-stop service between Columbus, Ohio, and either of these destinations.

That is awesome. I hope it happens!
Well this kicks ass
We are plannig a Cancun trip next June. I hope they get started by then!! The only problem that I see with this is that a week in Cancun you will need a lot of luggage.
I was going to say, I don’t know what’s going on with these plans, because in both of those cases I see passengers routinely needing lots of luggage. It’s not like people are going to be staying with friends or family already living Cancun or Nassau (well, OK, I certainly don’t have friends with permanent homes in the Bahamas …), and it’s hard to pack light for an international trip, especially if you plan to stay for a week or two.
It is $5 per bag for a max of 2 per person isn’t it? Can’t you bring on board a carry on? That 6 bags for a week long trip for $20 extra! For fares that going for half as much that is a tremendous savings. My wife and I used 4 bags total for our 7 night cruise, maybe the rest you carry too many clothes with you on a trip?
I know for long trips for me, I still just usually check 1 bag. A big bag, but still just one.
Oh, and if they do cheap flights to Cancun we would have people driving in from all over the state for that during Spring break. From PA and IN too.
. . . oh, this is a great annousement if it pans out. Both locations would be a great additon and would certainly bring in more regional travelers to/from Columbus.
Still praying for a Vegas announcement re: Skybus :) :)
…holy god, if the rates are even close to as low as the other flights I’d be taking a vacation every couple months.
Anne & I spent 10 days in Hawaii last year and managed to get by with just two backpacks and two smaller under-the-seat carryons. 8)
That’s definitely great news! I don’t think the checked luggage cost will be that big of a deal – in fact, it’d probably help Skybus better recoup the costs of the trip, since people WOULD be more likely to be checking luggage.
If it does happen, just remember to make sure you have a current passport!
As far as I’ve read there’s no plans for them to change their pricing model of first 10 tickets for $10 then bumping up to $30, $50, $70, $100 or whatever incriments they use.
Which is pretty awesome for people able to jump on them ASAP.
Hell, would be fun just to hop on a $10 flight, head out of the country for a drink, and then hop back on to fly home.
Margaritas, booze cruise, getting high (parasailing) Cenotes, fresh seafood here I come!!!
If prices are as good maybe in the future there can be a CU meet up at:

wouldn’t that be awesome?
I just heard that starting in November, Tampa, St. Louis, Chicago has been added to the Skybus lineup.
Nice! Any word when tickets will go on sale? I’m sure those Chicago ones will go hella fast.
This is the first story I’ve seen reporting some real numbers about airport traffic since Skybus started up…

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Passenger traffic was up by 11 percent last month at Port Columbus, according to the Columbus Regional Airport authority.
More than 645,000 travelers flew out of Columbus’ airport in May.
The increase was spurred on by the startup of Skybus and growth in other airlines, 10TV News reported.
In 2007, Port Columbus has seen an overall increase of 10 percent with about 3 million travelers passing through the airport.

I’m sort of curious how much of an impact Skybus will have when we look at numbers a year from now.
And I’m pretty stunned that this 11% increase was in May, while Skybus launched their first flight on May 22nd cutting their impact to only 1/3 of that month.
If we do see more more traffic in the long run, they’re going to have to hustle on those airport upgrades.
After looking this up I found out it’s being offered through Southwest, and not Skybus. Still cheap, but not $10 cheap. :P

oops, Skybus has me brainwashed to the point whenever an airline adds flights at Port Columbus, I assume it is Skybus. That is still great news. In response to the previous post, I have noticed Port Columbus getting more and more crowded each month.
Right now on Travelocity you can get flights from $518-$560 each to Cancun. So even prices in the $200 range would still be a great deal!
