The original Banana Bean location on Whittier Avenue has had their windows papered up and business closed recently, with a bit of a secretive air as to what was going on inside. Today, Angie Caskey, one of the owners of the Banana Bean Cafe, along with her son and husband are relaunching the space with the soft opening of Skillet, a new restaurant concept they’re describing as “Rustic Urban Food”. Their full menu isn’t available online yet, but they have mentioned that their soft opening includes offerings such as a Grilled Jerk Pork Burger (topped with Honeycrisp Apple Slaw and Double Smoked Cherrywood Bacon, served on a Grilled Brioche Roll) and a Black Bean Ravioli (served with Duck Confit with Roasted Corn, Poblanos, Spanish Manchego, and Smoked Paprika Cream).
The location will only be open for lunch from 11am to 3pm Tue-Sun during the first two weeks before expanding for dinner and brunch starting October 20th. We’ll post up a link to the menu once it is made available.

I love the imagery
Congrats and best, I’m excited to try it soon!
I can’t wait to try this. It sound delicious!
Delicious news, Walker. I’m looking forward to some familiar faces over there, which means as much to me as the great food. This is reason to celebrate!
hey walker
just to let you know Skillet is owned by my sister, her husband and son. The Banana Bean has no interest in the new business other then it being our old location. However the Banana Bean wishes them well and much success! Go Skillet…….
Good morning all! Just to elaborate on Elaine’s post. Just one of the three owners of Banana Bean (that would be me) is involved with Skillet, and we are very excited about our newest venture. The actual “brain & brawn” behind Skillet is my husband and son. Looking forward to seeing everyone, thanks!!

@Elaine – Hey there! It’s time to visit you at Greenlawn for a Softshell Crab Po’ Boy. We wish Angela and family well too.
@Angela & family – I’m looking forward to hearing your story and of course trying some great food. Go Skillet indeed!
I catch the bus outside of this place most mornings, and snapped a photo of the menu posted on the window today.

Thanks for the clarification, Angie & Elaine. Fixed the original post up top. ;)
This is wonderful news. That menu looks great.
Angela, thanks for continuing to support the neighborhood (and very happy I live only a few blocks away).
I walked past it many times. I’ll have to check it out soon.
That menu sounds great! As soon as you open for dinner, you’ll be seeing a lot of me.
Great news, I was wondering about the trailer sitting along side the building.
Went in for lunch today, got the “Black Bean Ravioli with Duck Confit, Roasted Corn, Poblanos, Spanish Manchego, and Smoked Paprika Cream”. It was every bit as delicious as it sounds. Big ups to Skillet! I shall return. Shrimp Po’Boyger, you’re next.
You knew it was only a matter of time before one of these food blogger types would stop in here.

I don’t think GA Benton tried the pierogis but wow – he is head over heels in love with Skillet. Even more annoyed that it was closed when we tried to go on Monday.

I quote: “Consider me blindsided, cold-cocked and keelhauled by the unbelievably wonderful food I had here for lunch. Consider it my favorite new restaurant. Consider eating at Skillet as soon as you possibly can!”
cr0m and I went for lunch on Sunday. He got the jerk pork burger and begrudgingly gave me a bite (cr0m does not share well when he likes his food). It was delicious and the apple slaw that came with it was perfect. I liked the peppery bacon and the brioche roll was nicely toasted and held up well. I got the griddled cheese and pumpkin soup. The sandwich was very good, nicely melted cheese on substantial bread and the pumpkin soup was flavorful and interesting. We also shared some roasted beets with goat cheese and almonds. I also enjoyed those but next time will ask for extra goat cheese, only because I think you can never have enough :) All in all very good meal, especially for the price. One the owners/chef came out and talked to us, damn my inability to remember names despite asking him twice. They don’t have plans to take reservations right now and I’m not sure it would fit the order at the counter, casual style they have. My advice is to get there soon, because I think once the word gets out it’s going to be tough to grab a table at this tiny joint. I can’t wait to go back and have brunch and dinner!
Went for brunch with my mom yesterday – the food was fabulous and very unique. I had shredded apple and farmer’s cheese pancakes, and my mom had the breakfast risotto with vanilla and bruleed peaches. Just delicious! I’m so excited to try the lunch items. It was also nice to hear about the local food philosophy of the restaurant - the chef took the time to come to talk to us about our meals and about how the restaurant’s food was sourced. I’m definitely making Skillet one of my new regular spots!
I drove by and checked out the menu. It’s on the top of my list of must-eat-at places for the week. It’s nice to see something fresh and innovative happening!
Everything was perfection! I love this restaurant; great prices, too! Best place I’ve been in ages. I bet you’ll love it too…
