    Short North White Castle Development Approved

    Demolition and construction work could start as soon as this summer on the Short North White Castle site after the Victorian Village Commission approved the latest plans for the development at their meeting yesterday.

    Although final details such as lighting, signage, and the color of some exterior elements will still need to get final approval, the overall plan for the building was given the green light. That plan has not changed much since November, when developer Borror Properties scaled back the development in response to concerns about its size.

    Plans to redevelop the site were first announced in the fall of 2014.

    The approved building will be six stories tall along High Street, with an eight-story section set back farther from the street. It will feature 98 apartment units, 12,000 square feet of office space, 11,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and 206 parking spaces, with a minimum of 104 of those open to the public.

    Jeff Baur, Executive Vice President of Borror Properties, said that the approval from the commission will allow them to start on more detailed construction drawings and begin working through the city permitting process.

    “We’re excited,” he said. “This is the result of a lot of collaboration with the city and the commission and the community, and I think all parties involved worked together well to get to this result.”

    He added that they’ve had multiple discussions with potential retail and office tenants, and continue to be encouraged by what they view as a  strong market for apartments in the Short North.
