Most travelers don’t give much thought to Ohio. But in the last few years, Columbus has undergone a transformation. By luring young professionals to its homegrown empires like the Limited and Abercrombie & Fitch, the city has seen a flurry of downtown development — and gained an unexpected new profile as a Midwestern style capital.

The transformation has mostly taken place in the Short North district, a gallery-filled strip of North High Street.

  • Good to see the SN in more out of town news stories. :D

  • Walker wrote The Tee Jayes nod ruined it for me. That place is gross, and there’s a lot of better greasy spoons closer to the Short North than that. Why not mention the Goody Boy instead?

As others have pointed out already, I believe that mention was made tongue-in-cheek and to show that although Columbus has some upscale/trendier places, it has not completely forgotten its Midwestern roots.

As far as there being “a lot of better greasy spoons closer to the Short North.” Name 3.

  • Goody Boy

    Jack and Bennys

    Nancy’s Home Cooking

I also would have accepted Nick’s Diner (although I believe it has changed names).

Really I should have asked for more than three, since you mentioned “a ton.”

Also, it’s up for discussion as to whether those places are better. The cornmeal pancakes at JeeJays are quite delicious.

The sad truth is there is a dearth of worthwhile diners (and a complete lack of late night diners) in the Columbus area. This has been lamented on other threads as well.

For you to go on a public forum and badmouth Teejays, the only place in the downtown area to get pancakes late at night (Dublin Rd. location), shows a lack of respect for furthering Columbus as a place that is welcoming to younger people moving in and expanding the economy and horizons of the city. For shame. And there is a large constituency of people who enjoy downhome cooking. We’re not all so quick to dismiss our roots and become “Mr. Big City Super Vegan Organic Soy Pancake Crepe guy.”

If you want to see more late night non-fast food come to downtown, maybe it would be good to start by supporting what few places there are?

It’s not enough to just complain, Walker. I’d like to see constructive criticism, or none at all.

  • I really do wish I had the time to offer you an essay on why I think other places should have been instead, Paul.

But I simply don’t like Tee Jayes. That’s all there is to it. I’ve tried it a could times and never had anything I liked.

I’m more of a waffle house man for late-night breakfast grease. I’d prefer to have one downtown, but that’s probably a pretty unrealistic dream as Waffle House seems to only build along major highways for the truck-stop crowd.

Otherwise, you’re totally in the right. I’ve got zero respect for anyone or anything!

    THANKS!

I’m just trying to support a sustainable downtown community here, Walker. If you want to tear that down because you “simply don’t like” things, that’s fine.

  • Big up’s to TeeJay’s Cornmeal Pancakes!

  • I have to admit I have never been to Tee Jay’s. It really sounds like my style of eating though. Niki and I almost went there for valentines day last year for the 2 steaks for (something around) 10 dollars. I really like sauces. I can eat sauces plain pretty merrily. The only thing that makes me happier than sauces is gravy.

  • I’m afraid with anymore TeeJaye’s hate, I’ll have to organize a Barnyard Buster festival…and chain Walker to a chair while he’s fed several.

  • In line with TeeJay’s. I am surprised that Coney Island has not been taken over in that annoying hipster ironic sort of way.

  • Oh yeah, and when those ironic hipsters are done eating there, if they could come to Tigertree, that would be cool too.

  • TeeJayes is surprisingly hip actually, you’d be amazed at the fahbulous drag queen population at 3 in the morning ;)

  • Paul wrote I’m just trying to support a sustainable downtown community here give you a hard time here, Walker.

    FIXED.
