Longtime event getting new glow

On the first Saturday of the month for more than 20 years, thousands of people have descended on the area of High Street known as the Short North for the Gallery Hop. The evening toasts art with the launching of new exhibits, plus shopping, eating and more. The official hours: 4 to 10 p.m., although many shops open earlier and many bars and restaurants close much later.
The next Gallery Hop could usher in a new era of lighted arches over N. High Street in the Short North. The lights have been a long time coming — since late 2002, when they were turned on but quickly fizzled out. Repairs have been made at last.
Beyond light-watching, here are other possibilities for an evening at the Gallery Hop:

It took me a while to actually notice the lights, because I didn’t pay attention to them at first. Oh well, maybe next time (unless they go out again, )
It was nice to see the all the lights on this past weekend. There was a 10 minute brown out while my wife and I were eating, I hope it wasn’t related to the arches turning on. :D One of the more crowded hops I have been to and the arches did bring a great environment to the event.
I’ve been to around 5 hops and the SN has lost power for ALL of them.
I’m glad that the lights are kind of working again in the Short North, and I have no ethical problem with the lighted arches.
Except for the expensive logistical problems that have occurred with them during the past several years. I get that they harken back to the history of the region and all that, but were they worth the cost?
Couldn’t we have just gotten a few eager middle-school students to set up a series of cheerful Frosty the Snowman figurines available at WalMart for $29.99 a piece.

Also a flickr search turns up a lot of newer photos with the lights on:
