Best Neighborhood of 2008: The Short North

It’s no surprise that the Short North won “Best Neighborhood” of 2008 by a healthy margin over the competition. It’s easily the most complete urban neighborhood with a vibrant mix of residential spaces, unique restaurants, boutique shopping, art galleries, watering holes, swanky lounges, pocket parks, and more.

The Short North is home to the well-attended long-running Gallery Hop events, and 2008 saw the birth of several new events including Art al Fresco, and the Highball Halloween festival.

2008 also saw several new large development projects at various stages: The Jackson broke ground and got most of the underground work finished by the end of the year, while Ibiza had their ribbon cutting in April, but have delayed the start of construction until 2009.

The centralized location of the Short North doesn’t hurt either, placing it between the giant workforce Downtown and the giant student population at OSU. It’s also a short walk from the North Market, Nationwide Arena, and Goodale Park just to name a few of the amenities.

This combination of reasons is what keeps the Short North vibrant and attractive in 2008 for both residents and visitors alike.

Second Place: German Village

Third Place: Clintonville

Does this mean that the rest of the “Best Of” winners will be named soon?

    Walker Says:

Yep. This is the second one so far (best political development came a few days ago).

The others will be up through this week and next. :D

After living in two major cities on the East and West Coast. I truly believe that the Short North is one of Ohio’s best neighborhoods. I live in the Short North and found that everything is in walking and/ or cycling distance, which is my favorite and only form of exercise. Hats off to Columbus for creating an enviroment comfortable to a diverse mix of urbanphiles.

I’m sure it will be all downhill because the city thinks “their work is done here”.

Who are you referring to with “The City”?

    Isn’t “The City’s” work done?

I mean, they totally revamped all of the infrastructure in the area, built an arena, built a convention center, subsidized the North Market, subsidized the construction of new condos, and even built a bunch of light up arches. “They” even tried to add a Streetcar to connect it to Campus and Downtown.

What more is there for “The City” to do? Pay peoples’ mortgages?

I like the Short North, but it´s too yuppified. I´m partial to the Peach District, Downtown/Gay St., and Old North Columbus myself.

    Now you’re talkin’ - where’s the Sho No’s bailout?

Thank the lord!! I did have a small fear that as a joke people would put that “other” neighborhood and I would have to throw my laptop out the window :)

Walker, after all the “best of’s” are revealed can we get a few of your “favorite” answers? I have to believe there are some really funny ones we’ll never see if you don’t share!!!

Hrm. Maybe I should just add them to the comments here? ;)

Well yes, that would work too!! Always making things SIMPLE, Walker!!

So… I just looked back through the results on this one. Not too many silly suggestions for best neighborhood. One person put “Santa Maria” but that was about it. Some of the other poll questions got some much weirder answers, so I’ll share those as well.

But for those who want to know:

    4th Place: Downtown
    5th Place: Grandview Heights
    6th Place: Victorian Village
7th Place: University District / Campus
    8th Place: Italian Village
    9th Place: Harrison West
    10th Place: King Lincoln

Yes, it was more the other questions I was thinking of. Good to know how the categories round out though. Way to go KLD for rounding out the Top 10 :)
