    Shop Talk: Posh Pets

When you want to pamper yourself, you likely dine in a independent restaurant or shop at a unique local boutique rather than at a boring everyday chain. So if you want to pamper your pet, you should probably skip the big box stores and head straight to a shop like Posh Pets in the Short North.

Jo Johnson opened her business at 743 North High Street in November of 2002, to provide a place for shoppers to find the types of treats, toys, clothing and other pet accessories that they just couldn’t find anywhere else.

“At first we catered to the people who wanted over the top items that you would only see in magazines and movies,” she explains. “After the drop of the economy in 2008 I had to make the decision to offer more middle-of- the-line, everyday items that still fit the budget. Just because it’s Posh Pets it doesn’t mean it is expensive.”

Johnson’s customers come both from within the Short North as well as all over the region and beyond, citing a steady stream of newcomers that venture up from the Convention Center and Downtown hotels during big events and conferences. And those customers lately have gravitated towards pet sweaters during this cold winter as well as fashionable clothing items to let their dog or cat know they are loved.

“The bling collars are always a favorite, and they are the same price as the day we opened which makes them even more special,” says Johnson. “Enrichment toys that keep the pups minds focused on appropriate things instead of your shoes or couch are always great. And our long-lasting chews along with our treats are all made in USA.”

Another big trend that Johnson has noticed lately is a specific focus on pet diets and heathly eating. She says that many are moving to a grain-free diet, which means seeking out treats that are wheat, corn and soybean free.

Johnson is a pet owner herself, which helps her to bond both with current owners and future pet owner customers.

“I have a rescued kitty, Miss Fiona (stage name Pussy Galore) and a rescued Pomahuahua Dog,” she said. “We host rescue groups on the weekends trying to educate people on breeds they conceive to be dangerous plus just some really stinking cute dogs and cats.”
