Shop Talk: Old World New Home

Old World New Home moved into its current location, at 941 N. High St., in January after quickly outgrowing its former storefront just three blocks north. One look inside the shop’s windows and it is easy to see why many of its customers make the drive from Springfield, Ohio, where co-owner Carlene Crist resides, for a visit.

The shop’s 1,500-square-foot showroom is a light-filled haven for all things shabby chic, from furniture and home accessories to vintage women’s clothing and jewelry. Chandeliers, reproduction skeleton keys, candles by Scentsible Scents (hand-poured by a woman in Brookville, Ohio), and soaps made with herbs from Crist’s garden round out the offerings.

The tie that binds all Old World New Home’s merchandise is an antique or vintage appearance, despite the fact that some of the tables and votives are new, Crist says.

The shop also features furniture that Crist has restored. In fact, 30 years ago she converted an antique buffet into a changing table for her twin sons, and today one of the shop’s most popular items are buffets being used for the same purpose.

Crist also has a daughter, Betsy, who co-owns Old World New Home.

“We work well together,” Crist says, adding that the two have been working side by side since they manned a booth together at the Springfield Antique Extravaganza in September 2009.

They had so much success selling their wares that they snapped up the shop’s original Short North space just two months later. The rest is history.
