One local boutique is combining commerce with a cause.
FernBird, at 3337 N. High St. in Clintonville, carries a variety of merchandise −from clothing and jewelry to art and home décor− and it has promised to donate 10 percent of its profits to local and international charities that empower women and fight sex trafficking.
“For a long time, I have wanted to open my own shop,” said Laurel Lautensack, FernBird’s owner. “I also have a passion for helping others. Upon learning that Columbus was one of the leading cities for sex trafficking, it made sense to combine the two.”

FernBird’s wares are sourced from Central Ohio and beyond.
“Some products are the creations of close friends,” she said. “Some products are my own design. Others were created by those looking to make a positive change in life. From the people who make the items to the places where they are found, each piece has a history and a story.”
FernBird debuted Dec. 3, 2011 and was mainly open on weekends during the holiday season. Beginning in January, though, the 2,000-square-foot shop began operating seven days a week.
FernBird will host a grand opening at the end of February, Lautensack said.
