Shadowbox moving into the Brewery District

Press Release wrote Shadowbox Building Permanent Home Downtown

July, 2008, Columbus OH - - Following an exhaustive search and much media speculation, Steve Guyer, Shadowbox president and CEO, announces the Shadowbox Board’s decision to move the sketch comedy and rock ‘n’ roll club to a permanent home in Columbus’ Brewery District.

After a ten year stint at the Easton Town Center, the popular performance troupe plans to build the Shadowbox Homecoming Project, a multi-use, multi-purpose facility at 495 South Front Street, currently the Brewmaster’s Gate building.

Increased seating capacity, a coffee shop / bar, and additional programming will make the building operational 7-days a week.

Was announced almost a year ago, but without any sort of details on when/where.

Good to hear it’s still in the works! :D

Yeah.. looks like they have alot of city/business involvement in the planning too..according to their “advisory board” for the move.

It would be great for the Brewery District… and it would also be great to get some use out of the Brewmaster’s Gate space.

It would certainly make me happy. I love going to their shows, and spending less money on transportation to them would be a bonus. It’s just surprising that they’re being offered a better deal than Easton gave them.

The Dispatch wrote Troupe to leave Easton, build home in Brewery District

    Wednesday, July 16, 2008

    BY MICHAEL GROSSBERG

After a decade at Easton Town Center, Shadowbox will return to the central city. The comedy-music-theater troupe plans to announce today that it will build a home in the Brewery District to accommodate larger crowds and more performances.

The site, to be redeveloped from the Brewmasters Gate entertainment complex on S. Front Street at a cost of $5 million to $7 million, will include a 350-seat theater (compared with the 214-seat venue at Easton).

The move will mark a long-awaited return to the heart of Columbus for Shadowbox, which presented shows in a Spring Street warehouse from 1994 until March 1999, when a fire destroyed the 120-seat venue.

this is great news for the troup and the brewery district. front street has been really hurting for a long time. this should bring some of the action and excitement back. it’ll make it a destination again. can’t wait for this to be completed.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

I think this officially makes that block the most diverse place in Columbus…Handke’s, Tommy Keegan’s, Major Woody’s, After 5, Outland, and Shadowbox? Pure awesomeness.

Nice to see Brewmaster’s Gate land a signature act like this. Hopefully this gathers a convoy of other businesses into other empty office and retail spaces in that area, too … the last time I was down that way (been a while, admittedly), there were far too many such spaces. (Empty ones, I mean.)

Very cool news! The building rendering looks great, and I’m really looking forward to their expanded offerings - I still miss 2Co’s, so it sounds like “Stage Two” might fill some of that void. The Brewery District definitely feels like a good fit.

That remodeling cost is going to be really rough on them - I hope they can meet (or exceed) their projections for the first year after the move — that’s a pretty big jump right there. I suppose it depends on how many of the added attractions they can get up and running.

Those lunchtime shows will probably double in popularity if they’re closer to all those businesses downtown. It would also be a neat way to treat out of town clientele to a slice of Columbus culture.

Shadowbox just updated their own page with info on the homecoming project:

One of the highlights there being the Facility Tour with a much larger rendering of the outside, and some interior renders and floorplans as well.

Definitely looks nice - though the performance space is actually not very different from what they use now layout-wise (presumably just larger).

SLIGHTLY off topic, but Rockmastermike and I made it to Shadowbox’s Best of 2008 show a couple of weeks ago and had a ball. I can recommend it. We’ll be catching Return to Forbidden Planet in a couple of weeks, and the reviews of that show look like a fun time is in store.

I can already see myself walking out of town guests over for a show. That never even registered as something to do in the past.

alright! more south side love. This is a big win for the BD.

I wish the Shadowbox would have been able to set up in downtown proper but the BD would have been my next choice :)

I’ll definitely be going to more shows.

I’m excited. They keep calling me periodically to offer us free seats, but the timing is always wrong and none of us enjoy dealing with the mess known as Easton, so I always decline. This will be great.

The Other Paper wrote Can Shadowbox survive its desertion of the mall it’s long called home?

    BY RICHARD ADES / JULY 17, 2008

In just over a year, Shadowbox will attempt to become the Brewery District’s new prime attraction. It had better succeed. In order to make the move, the rock-and-comedy nightclub has to give up its home at the Easton Town Center.

At first glance, it looks like a foolhardy risk. During its decade-long stay at Easton, the troupe has become so successful that on many nights it has to turn away folks itching to see its trademark blend of sketch comedy and rock ’n’ roll.

But, ironically, that’s precisely why its leaders are planning to leave the suburban shopping Mecca. “We literally can’t take advantage of the people who want to buy tickets,” says Shadowbox Executive Producer and CEO Steve Guyer.

So, by the end of next summer, Shadowbox hopes to put on its first show in a new and much bigger home in the Brewery District. It’s a move that both excites and terrifies Guyer, particularly because he’s all but given up trying to figure out exactly how many millions of dollars it will cost.

They’re still in Easton, but Rockmastermike and I made the trip out there to catch Return to Forbidden Planet last night. It’s an odd, funny show that’s equal parts bad sci-fi, good Shakespeare, and hilarious interpretations of both by the cast. Seriously, Miranda (from The Tempest) boards the spaceship (headed by Captain Tempest) and the cast breaks out into “Good Vibrations” in awe of her beauty.

The final performances of this are on August 3rd if you want to catch it. If Jerrod is your server, tell him that you were sent by that Fiddle gal who drinks scotch. He’ll know who you mean.

When they updated their site, it broke all of the old links. And their archives don’t contain anything (yet?) beyond last week.

There’s no way yet for me to update that URL, or any of the other old ones I’ve posted on CU.
