Nida and Chris Perry, who own Nida’s Sushi in the North Market, are looking to open a Thai and sushi restaurant in the Short North before the end of the year.

The new restaurant, to be called Nida’s, will be at 976 N. High St., which the Perrys bought in 2005, according to Franklin County records.

“It still will take some time” before the restaurant can open, said Nida Perry, who is a native of Thailand with education and experience in business. She and her husband also own the Best of the Wurst hot-dog stall at North Market.

That sounds about right to me.

  • I was just in to grab a quick lunch and they indicated that they should be open by next Saturday. With a menu of sushi and Thai food.

  • they now have a sign “Nida’s on High” above the window on High, but the window itself was still papered over.

  • Nice. Anne spotted the new sign/awning the other day. Looking forward to trying it out. :D

Heard the same thing. Waiting on passing the health inspection.

  • Weird. I just signed in to ask if anyone knew anything about this place. I saw it on my way back from my haircut. I have really been missing Thai food here. I wish it looked a little dirtier, but I can’t have everything.

  • So I left my gym and noticed the “Coming Soon!” sign on the door and as you can see the paper is gone.

The place is empty, so of course who could resist giving the handle a jiggle? I know I couldn’t…and it was unlocked!!! Well, I probably shouldn’t, what with trespassing being illegal and all, but OK. Anything for CU, even a large fine or jail time.

I’d give this place say, oh, around two weeks and then check it out. And yeah, I was allowed on the premises, pardon the trolling.

  • I like the aesthetic, assuming the food’s quality and price is comparable with the North Market location, I can see this getting a fair amount of my disposable income. Do Thai joints serve Sake? While this sounds interesting…

The misnamed Thai whisky (lao) refers to a number of distilled rice liquors, the best known being the infamous Mae Khong (“Mekong”) brand and its competitor Saeng Som. The only resemblances to whisky are the brown color and high alcohol content, and indeed many people liken the smell to nail polish remover, but the somewhat rum-like taste is not quite as bad, especially when diluted with cola or tonic water. This is also by far the cheapest way to get blotto, as a pocket flask of the stuff (available in any convenience store or supermarket) costs only around 50 baht.

Out in the countryside many villages distil their own moonshine (lao thuean), which is strictly speaking illegal, but nobody seems to mind very much. Especially when hilltribe trekking in the North you’re likely to be invited to sample some, and it’s polite to at least take a sip.

No sake at opening, though word is that they’re trying to remedy that asap.

  • I fear I may end up with as much blame as credit in the end! But I hope the drinks will translate well into the new restaurant. (If one does show up with lime and peanut as the dominant flavors, with a hint of Thai basil, by the way, Andrew Hall deserves the credit — I simply couldn’t make it work. The thing had the most remarkable way of coming out tasting like anisette. Fresh lime was the key.)

I suspect the Thai iced coffee cocktail will be the most popular. Personally I think the longan cocktail is the most interesting… and the peanut vodka makes the best shot, hands-down. :)

  • Is it open? I want Thai food right now. I’ll swing by on the way home. I don’t want to have to go all the way to Henderson for Bahn Thai.

    Not quite open yet…

I had a similar craving and went in the place downtown on Lynn Mall, looked at the menu and turned around and went to Brioso. Godspeed, Nida’s and Zen Cha, godspeed.

  • Agreed.

    This spot looks great.

It is lit well and has vivid colors to be seen from those who pass by on High Street.

The awning is really cool and again has great colors and design.

And the interior is just smashing.

  • I love the look of the inside, and am very happy for Nida, as this has been a dream of hers for years, and I know that she has been looking for the perfect location for years – and I know that I will be going to both locations to support her. Cannot wait until it is open. :D
