Time to celebrate the launch of Sandbox. A Columbus Coworking Community. Great food and drink from from our neighbors & friends at Bodega, Press Grill, La Fogata and (of course) cupcakes from Piece of Cake. Anna and the Androids and DJ Moxie will also be on hand to help us celebrate. In case you haven’t heard, Sandbox is Columbus’ first coworking space for entreprenuers, designers, developers, artists, freelancers, and interactive folks looking to come together meet, collaborate and build community.

Don’t forget about Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts as you catalog all that is great about Columbus along the lines of collaborative communities/shared space! JCLA is not one shared building space as Sandbox is but it is a whole block of historic buildings, which is home to local non-profit orgs. JCLA is itself an umbrella org that encourages collaboration between the orgs on the “campus”, while also providing affordable rent and running programs which develop the leaders at each organization. Talk to Kathryn Moore — she is super. JCLA is behind CCAD/Columbus STate, near the museum, off Broad Street on Jefferson Avenue.

Keep in mind that there is so much more to “coworking” than just sharing space. The concepts of community and collaboration are both very important. Yes, coworking absolutely includes sharing space, but sharing space does not always lead to coworking.

I don’t think it’s the Short North’s first shared office space either. I think someone tried to do something similar in the old Tigertree space.

Having previously worked out of the space that Qwirk currently resides it is much more divided than Sandbox sounds. I have not been in the new space, but unless they have taken down walls, it’s long hallways of divided offices. Sandbox sounds more like it’s more conducive to a true collaborating atmosphere. Either way, I think they’re both a great concept for the area.

I had heard about Qwirk and was actually planning to go check it out last week. I guess I didn’t realize it was fully open yet.
I updated the original post up top to rephrase it as The Short North’s first coworking space.

Thanks for the correction and reminder. I’m going to go check out Qwirk tomorrow and see how they compare. :D

I wouldn’t go as far as to say this is the first of its kind. A similar concept business opened in German Village last week. It’s called Qwirk. (Get it.) I do think this is a growing trend.
