San Francisco Oven in the Capital Square Building at 65 E. State Street, has abruptly closed after a 6 1/2 year run, to become another undisclosed restaurant.
A sign was posted on the window by General Manager Joey Jerome thanking the public for their patronage. This location was a popular lunch spot for downtown workers, particularly among the Capital Square crowd.
Joey has left the door open for a new restaurant as he wrote on his posting. “Watch for a new, delicious restaurant to open here soon.”
Best wishes to Joey and his staff, and here’s hopes that they’ll be part of this “new, delicious restaurant.”

Joey Jerome in a recent interview at SFO:
well this sucks, i was just talking about going there. I can’t see this closing because of lack of business, I’m thinking the ower prob. is just ready for a change.
@surber17 – They maintained a nice lunch flow, sold a fair amount of coffee in the a.m., and did a decent amount of evening patio business in the summer. They cut their evening hours and closed Saturday and Sunday to maximize their profits as most of their clientele came from surrounding offices. This spot would be excellent for the right concept.
Yeah, this place was pretty decent IMO. The patio esp. was very nice. I’m sure something will do well there.
I only went once or twice. Was never too impressed with their pizzas. I agree with honavery that the patio and space is really nice though and I’m looking forward to whatever comes next! :D
I’m kind of bummed because this means that there is a serious lack of good eats on the South side of the Statehouse…but I am sure something will come soon, and will be a money maker. Thank goodness for the tunnels underground the Statehouse that provides an easy getaway to Pearl Alley!
Too bad, clam chowder wasnt bad. Maybe Isabellas next door will benefit.
You know in 3 years working across the street, I can’t recall ever eating there.
Pecuniadea,
A quick 5-10 minute walk east to 4th Street and State will get you to some good food at Serenity Cafe next to the YWCA.
The pizzas were just ok. I liked the Calzones a lot.
Their tomato bruchetta was my favorite item on the menu. Probably one of the largest I’ve ever had – no small toast points there.
Their breakfast pizza was my least favorite item – there was no sauce, tomato or otherwise, on the baked pizza dough. Dried out toppings on a dry pizza dough base.

San Francisco Oven, 65 E. State St. Downtown, closed Feb. 19 after six years in business. Owner Bob Rohde cited an “extreme” drop in sales in the past year, which he blamed on the bad economy and the closing of Columbus City Center mall.
Has anything else moved in this space?
Not that I’ve seen. Slooooow transformation if it’s still even happening…
