A whirlwind of phone calls led to sources telling me that Chrissie Hynde (of the Pretenders) will open a VegiTerranean restaurant in the Shorth North. There is already one location of the moderately-priced Vegan restaurant at the Northside Lofts in Akron, OH.

Maybe that’s what will take over the old Coffee Table/8 Bar spot?

  • OMG!!! That sounds SOOOOPER amazing! I’m so excited. I hope it really happens.

  • Someone told me this like a year or so ago and I thought they were smoking crack. Either they made a really lucky wild guess or this was an idea from some time ago.

    Interesting that.

    A.

  • This would be fantastic. I have been wishing this upon Columbus for a while now.

  • Yeah, I heard rumblings about this a while back… color me curious.

  • hopefully Lisa is right about this coming. I would guess this isn’t slated for the corner of Buttles/High as it’s already been reported that a Columbus restaurant developer has that slot.

in thinking where another former bar/restaurant location has been, it would be interesting if they threw this farther up north, like where La Barca used to be – in between What the Rock and Surly Girl. It seems to be a great symbiotic environment for an eatery owned by someone who rose up through the London punk scene of the 70s and formed an eventual RHOF band.

of course maybe she has the money to eye some of the more high-end rental space in Dakota, Ibiza or the like?

  • I just wanna meet Chrissy Hynde…

  • I loved this place. I blogged it in November.

    VegiTerranean Review

Chrissie Hynde rode in on a motorcycle and served appetizers in a waitress outfit at the opening, so you might get to meet her, as well.

  • I’ve heard great things about the one in Akron, and Chrissy Hynde is one of my all-time favorite musicians, so I’d be thrilled if this happens, and I’m not even vegetarian. :)

LOL! I’m with ya, I’m pretty much the anti-vegetarian but I’ll eat here…especially for a chance to see Chrissy dressed in that waitress outfit from brass in pocket!

    +1

    She’s my idol!

  • I want CH and vegi food. Please.?

  • I’m from the Akron area and my folks just ate at the one in Northside. Even my dad (Mr Meat and Potatoes) liked it. That’s pretty impressive. I don’t need that much encouragement, so I’m just giddy with anticipation…

  • The Akron spot is chic. I stopped in there over the holidays. It makes for a nice day trip – coupled with the new Akron Art Museum that is…

  • I love the Queen of Ohio bringing me something that doesn’t have meat… something I can eat.

I am soooo ready for that.

  • I really hope this restaurant comes here! I heard the buzz about it in Akron and the Short North would be a fantastic location. Obviously there’s a market for it (look at the success of the two Northstar locations…I’ve never been to either Northstar location when it WASN’T busy…) And really there are not many other exclusively veggie/vegan restaurants in the Short North so it would be a great market for it. Cheers to this!

  • i hope there is enough room in this town for 2 vegan restaurants… dragonfly and vegiterranean.

I’m sure there’s plenty of space for everyone…

Yep. Considering there are dozens and dozens (if not hundreds) of restaurants that have vegan and vegetarian options, I’d say we can handle one more added to the mix.

    :D

  • i am ready for some new veggie food, and for cyclist to find a way to compare it to rally’s or white castle.

  • Hynde’s Akron Vegan Restaurant Expands

    2/20/2008 8:42:57 PM | Craig Simpson

Akron rocker and restauranteur Chrissie Hynde is expanding her downtown vegan establishment to Ohio’s capitol city.

The VegiTerranean, located at 21 Furnace St. in the Northside Lofts just north of downtown, opened in September of last year. The restaurant which claims to serve “Vegetarian Fair” with an “Italian Flair” is a product of Hynde, lead singer for the rock group “The Pretenders”, and business partner Dan Duplain.

Duplain’s associates confirmed they will open a second VegiTerranean in Columbus this summer, but wouldn’t give details. Although rumors on Columbus-based websites say the establishment will locate in the city’s popular northend restaurant & bar district called the Short North.

Last fall Hynde told Akronnewsnow that she wanted to open the vegetarian restaurant, bar, coffee house and bakery in her hometown because, “I don’t like to associate with meat eaters at all, so I don’t like to be with them in restaurants. So I’d rather be in a vegan restaurant.”

She obviously doesn’t appreciate people who eat animal byproducts as she referred to them during a September interview as “terrorists”.
