    Ohio’s Own: Rowdy Kitty Rub

Up until now, Grumpy Goat Chocolate Dope reigned supreme in the world of Ohio edibles with fabulously bizarre names.

Then Rowdy Kitty Rub moved into the line of site. It’s not for kitties or rubbing on kitties, it’s for peoples. It’s a seasoning mix made by Mom’s Gourmet out of Newbury, Ohio. Mom’s Gourmet makes more than Rowdy Kitty Rub. It makes a host of other spice mixes, all with unusual names: consider options such as Far Out Feather Dust or Awesome Antler Rub. There’s a theme at Mom’s.

Back to the feline version, though: the business is full-disclosure about the secret ingredients on the label. No ambiguous “herbs” here; it’s garlic, peppercorns (the whole rainbow: black pink and green, all ground), parsley, oregano and “all purpose seasoning salt”, the contents of which are also listed. The suggested pairings for the stuff are listed on the label too: chicken, steaks, mac and cheese and… rabbit.

The first cooking experiment involved burgers (chicken burgers, to be exact). The mix makes an impact. The peppery accents hit first, fresh and strong. Then the garlicky, savory elements chime in. At the end, the pepper still lingers. The Rowdy Kitty stuff could easily be an all-purpose item for stuff like salads or eggs, for eaters who like a little pepper kick.

For more sophisticated uses, the house website introduces several recipes suggested for using the rub: in sauerkraut, potatoes and chicken dishes. One user on the website insists that Rowdy Kitty Rub is sublime on Asian dumplings, so it’s pretty flexible.

All the products are gluten free, have no preservatives, no fillers, low/no sodium and MSG is never in the mix. This particular product was found at Fresh Thyme, a grocery chain that has a little local section at the end of an aisle.
