Romantic cards feature beautiful lettering and sentiments

Have you ever written your loved one a love letter? With all of the easy ways to communicate now, a love letter is something that may have become old fashioned. Taking the time to pen your thoughts and send them to that special someone can be very meaningful in today’s digital world. Being able to hold the words that someone lovingly and carefully pressed into paper gives them new weight.

If you worry that your own handwriting may not properly express the words you would like to say, consider a calligraphy service. Among many places you can find such a service is On Paper, a stationary shop in the Short North.

“Well penned calligraphy is absolutely stunning!” says Michelle Lawrence, Store Manager and Chief Invitation Consultant for On Paper. “Calligraphy has an added value, because most people can’t, or don’t, write with beautiful penmanship anymore, let alone create something to the likes of certain calligraphy styles.”

If you are short on time, a beautiful card can express the beauty of calligraphy and you can write a shorter note on the inside to express your feelings.

Romantic cards from local stationers. 'For My Love' Peabody Papers, $4. 'Happy Anniversary' by Sharon McMullen, Paper Remnants at Igloo Letterpress, $4.50. 'Happy Together' by Suzy Ultman, Igloo Letterpress, $4.50. 'I Gots the Hots for You' by Igloo Letterpress, $4.50. 'Always & Forever' Peabody Papers, $5. 'You're My One True Love Forever' On Paper, $5.50. You're the Cat's Pajamas! Pinney Kelly Paper, $3.95. 'Hello There-It's You That I'm Looking For' On Paper, $4.50. 'Love You' Igloo Letterpress, $3.00. 'From Here to Eternity and back...' On Paper, $5.

WIN IT! Get all of the cards above by sending an email to Anne with the subject ‘Summer Romance Week’ by June 14th.

If calligraphy is something you’d like to learn, the Calligraphy Guild of Columbus offers classes in their space at the Cultural Arts Center in downtown Columbus.

“We usually offer 2 workshops per year where we bring in well-known calligraphy teachers from all over the world,” says Carol Kimball, President of The Calligraphy Guild of Columbus.

“We are currently in the process of creating 6 week classes. As a part of our monthly meetings, the initial 45 minutes is focused on a predetermined lettering style, with knowledgeable instructors roaming the room, offering support and tutoring.”

The guild currently has about fifty members and the most popular style of calligraphy practiced is Italic. Last year, the group covered a different style each month.

From August 24 through September 23, 2013, the guild will have an exhibition at the Motorist Building at 471 East Broad Street.

“We expect to hang over 50 pieces in their huge atrium on the second floor,” says Kimball. “Opportunities to acquaint the community to the art of beautiful lettering are always welcome.”
