Summer is a great season for restaurant-goers in Columbus. Al Fresco dining turns every restaurant into a social experience and later summer hours lend themselves well to enjoying those extra moments of evening daylight. Many restaurants are also rolling out new menus that feature lighter fare and seasonal flavors. Below you’ll find a list of updates from all around Columbus. Pistacia Vera just expanded their outdoor seating to accomodate 30 patio patrons. Their new tables and chairs are a terrific “pistachio green” color too!
The Angry Baker is working on a small patio behind the bakery that will include an additional four tables. They’re hoping to have it open by this weekend.
Expanded Summer Hours:
Bel Lago will be opening for lunch service on Fridays and Saturdays starting on Friday, May 25th. The restaurant will also continue their brunch buffet every Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Their open air Terrace Bar also will be open daily (weather permitting) at 4pm for drinks and cold appetizers.
J. Gumbo’s on Gay Street has expanded their summer hours until 8pm Monday through Saturday. They’re also hosting happy hour specials Monday through Friday from 3pm to 8pm, which features wine and craft bottle beers including Abita, Bell’s, Lagunitas and others for $3 per bottle or $14 for a 5-bottle bucket. All appetizers are $5 and they offer a full dinner menu as well.
The Jury Room will be keeping their kitchen open late on Thursday nights to welcome new customers attending the 2012 Picnic with the Pops series at Columbus Commons.
Brothers Drake has new summer hours that will keep them open until midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, and until 2am on Friday and Saturday, so that you can enjoy any number of summer cocktails from their all-Ohio produced bar.
Basi Italia has shifted their popular Vino on the Veranda patio series to Wednesdays. Every week they will feature a wine expert and when possible include special guest winemakers. Wines are featured by flight, glass or bottle.
New Summer Menus:
The Columbus Brewing Company launched their new summer menu yesterday, which includes a chilled soba noodle vegetarian dish, sesame crusted sea scallops, and a black tiger shrimp stir-fry. They’ve also added new mixed drinks and house-made sangria to the lineup for the summer.
TILL Dynamic Fare has a new late night menu featuring all natural hot wings brined in-house and tossed with a Fox Hollow Farms sweet bacon glaze and drizzled with local blue cheese cream. They will also be featuring Hitachino white ale on tap. A new line of house-made vegan ice creams will be introduced soon, made with organic soymilk and organic sugar. Their first flavor will be made with sour cherries (grown in their kitchen garden) and valhrona chocolate.
Sage American Bistro has rolled out new summer dinner and cocktail menus. New dishes include lobster salad with fresh mango and avacado, and swordfish with scallops and lobster in a saffron-Pernod broth. New cocktails include a spicy cantaloupe martini, cucumber cilantro martini, and a grapefruit margarita.
Mozart’s Bakery in Clintonville is featuring new raspberry & chocolate mousse tortes for the summer.
Vienna Ice Cafe is featuring three new summery ice cream flavors: lemon meringue, apple pie and mai tai gelato.
The Jury Room is launching a new spring menu next Monday, May 21st, which features a garden fresh gazpacho, new appetizers including a goat cheese, pesto & roasted red pepper torte, several new salads, walnut encrusted whitefish, some lighter summer pastas and sandwiches including a muffuletta and their popular chicken salad on whole wheat. They’ll also be featuring two new rotating tap handles of local beers from Barley’s, Zauber, Four Strings and other new breweries launching soon.
The Cheesy Truck is launching a new sandwich this summer called The Royale, which includes mac & cheese and pulled pork on texas toast made by the Commonwealth Sandwich Bar. The Cheesy Truck will be found every Thursday this summer at Columbus Commons for both lunch and dinner.
The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls is launching a new lunch menu on May 21st, which includes a selection of burgers, sandwiches and salad. Their new summer dinner menu launches on June 5th, and includes Peking Duck, Summer Squash Ravioli and OYO Drunken Shrimp Cocktails.
Jeni’s Ice Creams has three new summer flavors, each inspired by American writers. The Whitman-inspired Wheatgrass, Millay-inspired Plum Sake, and the hometown Thurber-inspired Juniper and Lemon Curd. Jeni’s frozen yogurt push-pops will also be making a return with black currant, mago lassi, grapefruit and lime cardamom flavors.
Other Summer Updates Worth Noting:
Basil Thai is discontinuing their happy hour and lunch specials on Saturdays at the end of June, which gives you roughly six more weeks to enjoy before it disappears. The restaurant will be continuing their $2 beer and $3.95 small plate happy hour on weekdays as usual, as well as the 3-course lunch deal for $8.50 on Monday through Friday.
Marcella’s Short North location is celebrating five years this month! To celebrate, they are running a promotion with NBC4′s Monica Day through June 10th which features a new signature dish: Monica Day’s Milanese Risotto, which includes shrimp, garlic, white wine, saffron risotto, and herbed parmesan bread crumbs. $1 from each dish is donated to Autism Speaks and The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio.
