Restaurant Review: Lindey’s Polaris

By: borschke

So my parents were in town recently and I wanted to take them somewhere nice but original to Cbus. I decided that we could check out Lindey’s. I had never been there before but thought that it looked decent at least. We got to the restaurant and the menu looked decent enough. There was plenty of variety and I was extremely impressed with the wait staff and look of the place.

My mom had the cheese steak sandwich, my dad had the lobster pasta, and I had the Chicken Bianco Pizza (yeah yeah I know pizza from this place is probably stupid but whatever). Along with my meal I tried out the lobster bisque.

First off my parents just thought their meal was just alright. Nothing special or spectacular for the huge price that you would be paying for it. (both entrees over 12). My soup was good though and I was excited for my pizza. Unfortunately, like I was worried about the pizza was bland and had little flavor but that is what I get for going to a upscale place for pizza. It seems like there is no where you can really go around here for a gormet pizza besides figlio but thats another story all together.

For dessert I though that I would try the peanut butter banana bread pudding which sounded amazing but as you can tell it is no longer on the menu. It must have been some sort of special. It was by far the most disgusting dessert I had ever had in my life. The peanut butter sauce along with it was bland and the pudding along with it was burnt and without flavor. However, I was really suprised and upon the waiter checking back on the table I complained and he got me something else for dessert instead. I eneded up getting the chocolate chip cookies with some ice cream and it really was amazing.

So, all in all the service was fantastic. What other place would actually give you another choice if your food sucked? The dinners were a little bland and pricey but all in all a decent place to take someone in columbus to check out.

I was curious though:

Anyone been to the German Village one?

Anyone checked out their brunch?

What did you all think of their food?

Well, enjoy your weekends and keep on eating!

  • 1. The G.V. location tends to have better food I think.

    2. The brunch is GREAT…love it…although I like the food at Banana Bean more actually for breakfast/brunch.

You did get one of my favorites actually though, I love their Bisque.

  • I agree. Polaris = bad, GV = good. Never had a good experience at Polaris. The wait staff are little unprofessional bitches. Their side antics away from tables is less than desireable.

  • I thought the two locations weren’t affiliated at all.

  • Yeah, they’re the same owner.

  • BTW, if you do the brunch depending on taste I’d recommend either the Eggs Lindey’s (eggs, filet mignon, on an english muffin with hollandaise, kind of a super egg mcmuffin) or the stuffed french toast.

price is around 10 or 12 bucks if I recall.

  • I avoid Polaris in general, but I have been to the GV outlet a few times. At best, it’s a nice space with attentive service and passable (if overpriced) food. I go there only when it’s on someone else’s dime. Last time (2 weeks ago): lobster bisque and lobster sauce are the same thing. Glancing at one of my tablemate’s plates, I wondered if they also served the lobster sauce at room temp. I had a new-ish item, a dry aged steak. Some of the aging must have taken place after they cooked and sliced it, which was probably a couple of days before. If this wasn’t a situation where sending stuff back to the kitchen would not have been disruptive, every one of my courses would have gone back.

  • I’ve been to the GV one once, and was slightly disappointed. The service and atmosphere were both excellent, but I felt the food was just ok. There was also a lot of seafood on the menu, which I wasn’t expecting. Seems like almost everything had fish or lobster in it somehow.

  • Maybe a little off topic, but one semi-upscale place that I’ve found that has incredible pizzas (in fact, I go back there just for them) is the Columbus Brewing Company. I don’t know what it is about their pizzas, but they’re fantastic. I would never have expected it out of a brewery, but they’re damn good.

    IMHO

To continue the off-topicness, I totally agree. It’s probably our favorite casual dining place in the city. We split a flight of beers, a pizza and the roasted vegetable platter and get out of there for around $30.

I just hope the new ownership doesn’t tinker with things too much.

  • I’d agree the food is only passable. They don’t make their own lobster bisque, it comes from a bag; it is tasty, but I thought I’d point that out. I do like the patio at the GV location and I’ll go there for drinks in the summer but I’ve never been wowed by the food.

Just to clarify, the Lindey’s in GV is privately owned, but the Polaris Lindey’s is part of the Bravo/Brio family which was largely purchased last year by an investment company. They are kind of affiliated, but the Lindey’s GV is not under the corporate umbrella.

As for your amazement that they brought you something new when you didn’t like your dessert, any reputable restaurant should happily replace anything you don’t like. I offer to do it all the time where I work; I find many people don’t want to be a bother, or wait for something new, but I always offer to replace something they don’t like. I try to let the guest feel like it’s no big deal because if they don’t like something they’re going to tell a million people how bad the food was, but if you offer to get them something they will like, they’ll tell people you were accomodating.

  • AHHH…ok, that makes sense then. I knew there was the Bravo/Brio connection but didn’t quite get it all.

I actually went to school with Sue Doody’s kids so used to eat at GV Lindey’s all the time, but honestly there’s just too many better places to go for me. I have a lot of friends who are there at least 3 times a week for a happy hour, but I rarely join them.

  • Damn, they don’t prepare their lobster bisque??!!? I always thought it was pretty good. How can I get my hands on some of those bags?!?!?

I’ve had brunch/dinner at the GV location a few times and brunch at the Polaris location. Atmosphere is much better at GV. I always thought the food was pretty good. Always enjoy the bisque and wedge salad. I guess there probably are better places for the money, but I can’t think of a recent outing anywhere that I’ve been wowed. It always seems to be, eh, ok for the money…..

  • after learning that bisque is made from the straining of all the “leftover” parts, plus some of the meat, i won’t ever eat it again. Brains, guts. etc. BLEGH!

  • So you don’t eat sausage either? It’s made from leftovers.

    And jello is out too?

    Animal leftovers are gooooood… :D

  • Hm, in regards to the making of bisque, I couldn’t even begin to list all the things made with “leftovers.” First of all, you are going to have to cut out all stock and basically every sauce, because every stock is made with “leftovers.” I agree, animal and veggie leftovers are delicious. Without them, we wouldn’t have meat or veggie stock, or demi glace, pate, confit, jam, juice, eau de vie, grappa, vinegar, etc. As a matter of fact, for most of recorded time, probably none of us would have been able to afford to eat any of the cuts of meat we enjoy on a daily basis. Good cuts of meat were given to royalty only and everyone else ate the scraps. You might want to think about doing a little research on where your food comes from.

  • I just wanted to say I didn’t mean my comment about researching food to be mean, and it might have come out that way. it’s just that most of us in American today take our food for granted; we have no idea what it takes to produce meat, or how effectively we can use all parts of the animal. As someone who has slaughtered animals on numerous occasions, it is a sensitive subject for me; we would waste far less if we had to see the entire process of pasture to table.

  • I’ve never been to the German Village location, so I can’t compare the two, but I do enjoy the Polaris Lindeys. I agree that the bisque is excellent, bag or no, and brunch was very tasty as well. I don’t know if they do the brunch buffet every week or only for special occasions, but it’s very nice – not often you get *quality* crab cakes in an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Outside of those, the regular food is good, but nothing spectacular for the price. They’ve gone through numerous menu changes and more than once my favorite item has been cut.

Also worth noting is the Warm Chocolate Cake dessert. One of my all-time favorite dishes in the city – my wife and I have gone there several times just to have dessert. I’d recommend swapping the coffee ice-cream out for vanilla, but either way it’s delicious!

  • lisathewaitress is. the original lindays is still owned by rick doody. interestingly enough these 2 firms (or least castle harlan for sure ) were the ones who bought mccormick and schmick’s (we have a location in columbus) and then took it public 4 or 5 years ago. i think rick doody still owns some stake in bravo probably no more they 30% or something though, dunno google it if you really care that much.

now my opinion on lindeys. its cool i mean truthfully, i prefer bon vie over lindeys. at either of these places i always order the mussels for an apetizer and i believe the ones at bon vie are superior. bon vie actually might have the 3rd best mussels i have ever had, first and second both being at restaurants on long island. i have been to quite a few top notch (read very expensive restaurants) and i dont believe their mussles touch bon vie’s. this being said bravo should have done the buy 100 get 25 free on gift cards this year, camron mitchell still does it, id imagine the pe firm is cutting costs and stopped that program. these are the best things ever because i always buy them as christmas presents and keep the 25 for myself, usually buying at least 4. greatest idea ever i love it.

  • oh as for polaris or gv i have been to both equal amount i would say. not sure about after work crowd at gv but after work i think it used to be tuesdays at polaris was like 3 dollar martinis or something, and it used to be packed with people, especially bank one.

  • damn scatter branined, i forgot to say also i enjoy them equally. however, those who get valet during the middle of the day at gv are retarded i never have a problem finding a spot within half a block or less. makes me sick spending money for something you can do for yourself. i fell for this trick at barcelona once, gave him like 15 dollars and literally the car was 8 feet from the entrance where i could have easily parked myself, but it was raining and i was with a girl, so whatever.
