Recycling Input Sought via Community Survey

By: Walker

During the 2010 State of the City Address, Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced that a new citywide recycling program would be put in place by 2012 to serve all single-family homes. The first step in defining that plan was made today as a new community survey has gone live at RecycleColumbus.org. Columbus residents are encouraged to fill out the survey and help identify the type of plan that would best serve the entire community.

“This is the beginning of a community process to engage our residents about the best way to implement a comprehensive curbside recycling program in the City of Columbus,” said Mayor Coleman in a press release issued today. “This can’t just be my recycling program. It has to be our resident’s recycling program. Because it won’t be successful if they don’t use it.”

One proposal offered by the mayor during the original announcement was an alternating schedule of recycling trucks and yard waste trucks that would serve on a bi-weekly basis.

The online survey will be up through July 31st and 1,200 random homes were mailed a hard-copy version of the survey.

neat you can recycle styrofoam now. but i feel like it is another thing to store until i get enough to make a trip worth it. i get annoyed when companies still use styrofoam packing peanuts. just crumple up some newspaper!
  • I’m very excited that the city will be offering recycling as a city-paid service next year, provided the levy passes. I do understand that it’s a difficult time to suggest a new tax, but it’s a wise investment for Columbus.

Not only will this benefit our environment, projections show it will also result in millions of dollars saved over the next 10 years in refuse & landfill costs. The plan recommended by the city is to consolidate recycling with yard waste collection, which seems like a smart idea. The infrastructure is already in place, and it’s an easy change for residents

  • We currently use two 18-gallon bins from Rumpke. I love the option of having a wheeled container with a lid instead (similar to the 90-gallon trash containers but smaller). Then I wouldn’t have to worry about our paper recyclables blowing out of the container on a windy day. Plus I don’t need nosy neighbors walking by and counting how many beer bottles we have in our bin.

  • I really like the idea of a container with a lid as well.  I’m always worried about the paper getting soaked on a rainy day.  With a lidded container, I can keep the recycling outside and not worry about it collecting water.

  • Lidded containers would be great. If it’s for household use, I prefer the 35 gallon every two weeks. But I prefer an alley bin – I didn’t see an option for a 300 gallon alley container that everyone could use (and allow some of the can gleaners access at night).

Tanks for the comment Anne – I didn’t realize the city took polystyrene now. When did I miss that?

Uh… I haven’t seen anything about a levy or a new tax. Do you have any other info on that? I think you might be mistaking this proposed program with something else?

  • I am really excited about this! Coming from NY State, where we already had recycling, and where everybody just naturally recycles, it always bothered me to see things just thrown away. The husband and I already pay $11/month for the Rumpke curbside recycling, as it’s easier than taking it to one of the free bins. If there was a tax or charge, as long as it was less than $11/month, we’d be doing good. We have two 18 gallon trash bins, and i’m proud to say it takes us two weeks to fill up one; we haven’t ever needed the 2nd!

  • Parker, I don’t think they do in the bins, Unless I am reading this wrong, I think you need to take it to this place?

You can now recycle styrofoam in Columbus:

Phoenix Recycling on Hamilton Road accepts styrofoam from the public. Contact them to find out more:

    Phoenix Recycling

They accept all Polystyrene (Styrofoam), except used food containers.

  • We would need the 65 gal one picked up every other week.  This really depends on if I’m drinking that week or not… ;)

Because we recycle could go down to 65 gal TRASH cans too(or even possible the 35 gal one I think), so that could save some money possibly.
