Stringtown Road continues it’s “Polarisification” with the planned addition of a new 14-screen Rave Motion Pictures movie theater. Rave entered the Central Ohio market four years ago when they opened their 18-screen theater at 1071 Gemini Place near the Polaris Fashion Place. The new theater will anchor a strip mall development that includes a new Hobby Lobby and an existing Target and Urban Active Fitness Center.

Anyone else find it amusing that an “Urban” Active Fitness center is in a strip mall? Granted most of their other fitness centers are located in similar places…
Noticed that too. Oh silliness.
Sad to see more “Polarisification.” Good to get more jobs in the area, though.
I’m torn as to how I feel about this. On the one hand, it might be nice to have a theater relatively close to German Village. On the other hand, I’m worried that this will contribute to an already problematic traffic situation on Stringtown Road. My problem is that my golf club is located close to Stringtown Road, and the traffic makes my drive there longer than I’d like.
The Arena Grand is closer to GV I think, and Lennox isn’t too much farther then a trip to Grove City, but it will be good for those who live south of Stringtown. You can sneak into this strip mall by taking the back road off 104, the one that runs parallel to 71, and taking a right onto string town, no traffic on that part….yet.
I’ve never thought the traffic at Stringtown was quite as insane as Polaris, but it does get a little heavy during rush hour. It’s certainly on its way though, and adding more and more sprawling development isn’t going to help at all.
We do head down there from time to time for Target or Best Buy as it’s easier than going to Easton or Polaris, but I doubt we’ll go down there for Rave. We went to the Polaris location once and weren’t impressed. The Arena Grand is our go-to place most of the time, and the Gateway is a good theater as well if you’re looking for major releases. I agree with melikecheese that this new theater will serve the Grove City population (which is growing rapidly) more than it will folks closer to Downtown who have other options.
I dont do the burbs..so it doesnt matter to me.
-Live Inner city
Whether or not you plan on visiting, you do live in the Central Ohio region, and most large developments have implications that ripple well outside their neighborhood or suburban borders.
The hollywood film industry is struggling right now. I’ve read reports in the recent past that said that Columbus was already “over-screened” in terms of theater screens per capita, and the news of an additional 14 more was probably not met with much enthusiasm from other theaters all around the region, large and small.
So you may not care to see a movie at this theater… but the news of it’s arrival should certainly matter to just about anyone. If anything, a pro-urban-dweller such as yourself should be making it a stronger point to support the Arena Grand, Drexel, Studio 35, Gateway Film Center and any other places that you might enjoy and help soften the impact that this is likely to have. This news should matter to you.
@Walker +1
“Polarisification” LOL
That area really doesn’t have a descent theater anyway. The one next to K-mart, if it’s still open, is pathetic. If it is still open, Rave will be the nail in the coffin…..or it could become a $1 theater.
johnwirtz Says: “Polarisification†LOL
Have you been down there lately? The entire area east of 71 has exploded in the past 5 years. They’ve got just about every big box store and every chain eatery imaginable. Anne & I refer to it as “Polaris South” because it’s really started to feel like the same sprawling insanity.
I just really hope this doesn’t take business away from Arena Grand. I love that place. It’s so unique. I am seriously concerned about the number of theatres in this city. Although I love the Dollar theatres. The absolute best!
I try to avoid Arena Grand if at all possible. I’m not sure whether I would use this new theater in Grove City. I’m more likely to go to the Lennox or to Easton.
I just hope it doesn’t make my drive to the golf course longer than it already is.
Urban sprawl should not be praised in and around the city of Columbus. We have the opportunity to develop smart and this is not smart growth.
+ 1 haha
If folks choose to live in the suburbs, who are you to say that they should not have amenities in their area? You choose to live downtown…good for you. Others choose to live in the suburbs. I have no problem with that.
Being a man of above average girth, I welcome any theatre that is as comfortable as Rave.
@JJ – That’s at the expense of many residents of urban neighborhoods that have not seen any such subsidized investment that comes even close. What about their amenities? A lower-income resident that lives in Linden and only uses COTA is still paying for sprawl that they have limited or no access to.
Development on the outskirts like this just further unnecessarily burdens the region as a whole.
But how would you keep it from happening? I’m a fan of developing the urban core, but I don’t know how you go about stopping this kind of growth in the suburbs.
Thats Ohio for you…it will never change. urban Neighborhoods will always be here but at a minimum. Suburban sparwl will continue to take over Ohio..BLAH…It will take decades for Large cities in Ohio to out do sprawl and build up the inner cities.. we have the population..LETS DO IT!!!
