Newark could become part of a passenger and freight rail line running from Pittsburgh to Columbus if planners can find funding to begin the project.

The commission paid for two economic impact studies on the “Ohio Rail Hub,” which could include train stations in Newark, Steubenville, Columbus, Cleveland, Galion, Springfield, Dayton, Middletown and Cincinnati. It includes provisions for passenger and freight service.

Fowler said Newark is interested in the “$3-billion in development activity near stations,” which could benefit the city and its train-station location.

He said train stations along lines of this sort often have “transit-oriented development” nearby, including housing, retail and other mixed-use developments.

The trains that would operate in the Ohio hub would be “modern, fast, convenient and comfortable, with the on-board amenities that help people relax or do business,” information from the rail commission states.

Nicholson said the line could have six to eight trains running daily at 110 miles per hour.

now THAT is a quote for the ages ;)

  • It would be my official slogan if I were running for office in Gahanna. :D

  • Pretty neat post!

Has there been a proposal as to where the station would be located in Columbus?

  • That’s gorgeous… it would help the enormous congestion on 70 and E. Broad St… it’s a NIGHTMARE over there.

  • About. Damn. Time.

  • That is great that Newark is realizing the possibility, maybe gahanna will later recognize the potential development opportunity. Of course they do have ten years to decide.

Yes, we do plan on revisiting Gahanna city council within a month or two after the election. As I’ve stated before it was simply a matter of non-education on council’s part. Note that two of the four council members who voted against it thought it was a light-rail proposal. Nothing in the plans for the Hub Plan or during the offical ORDC presentation to council ever mentioned light-rail.

Also, the article misquoted my name. How’s that for a suburban news publication?

  • I have been thinking of something like this for many years. I know i’d be riding it a lot for the trips to pittsburgh for the weekend. But if it’s not happening for ten years. I’m hoping to be long gone by then.

  • The Ohio Hub cannot happen soon enough. This has me infinitely (yes, infinitely) more excited than any streetcar proposal ever could.

Sorry, with the current political climate and our current lack of political capital. It may take 10 years for the Col-Pitt line to be realized.

  • Shhh… don’t tell the Governor.
