The 1 million-square-foot downtown landmark, which now features a rainwater filtering system and a 15,000-square-foot “green roof,” has garnered national attention from the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. The group called Lazarus one of the two best ecofriendly development projects in the nation and the single best speculative building.
The green development was born along with the first phase of the Lazarus building’s renovation, which began in December 2004 after Federated Department Stores Inc. closed the store in 2002 and donated the building to Columbus Downtown Development Corp.
Downtown Development Corp. spokeswoman Amy Taylor said the building has achieved 97 percent occupancy with its second phase, focusing on office space, while the third phase will develop retail space.

“Green” Lazarus building gets national accolade

I went on the tour of the green roof on this building. It is really modern inside with art deco flair. They did a hell of a job. Looking foward to see the other non-state tenants. There is supposed to be artist lofts I thought??
Gold Level Certification status through the US Green Council’s LEED program
More than 50% of all of the materials removed from the facility were recycled, keeping almost 6 million tons out of the local landfill – the equivalent of almost 3,000 cars.
The Lazarus Building also features:
* Harvesting rainwater for cooling
* Recycling 75% of the construction and demolition debris
* Living roof with plants to reduce summer hear buildup
* Low-flow plumbing
* Energy efficient windows that reduce utility cost by 25%
* Using recycled materials where possible
There is a better article in the Dispatch
They mention the LEEDS Gold certification which is pretty impressive. It was – and may still be – the only rehab building to get that. They were just a couple points off of platinum. I forget what they told me what it was.
A.
i believe they expect it to be leed platinum by the time its finished. a studio in my firm is doing work in the building.
now all they need to work out is getting that “skywalk to nowhere” from city center down and then rennovate the high street facade.
Very impressive. Very awesome.
Can’t wait until they unveil all of the artist’s studios!
that’s pretty feckin neato!
They need to do the same kind of renovation to City Center, though I don’t have a clue what they could (successfully) use the building for.
This is so awesome!!!!
