New Proposal to Ban Texting While Driving in Ohio

By: Walker

Cleveland has already banned the practice of texting while driving, and the City of Bexley is working on something similar. According to an article in today’s Dispatch, the issue is moving state-wide as a new house proposal aims to make texting while driving illegal throughout all of Ohio. The language of the new proposal states that a person cannot be pulled over for the practice, but can be issued a secondary ticket of $250 if caught. Additionally, a movement is already under way at the national level, so the practice could very well be banned throughout the US sometime soon.

  • I wish people were smart enough that we didn’t need this law…. but…..

  • What’s next?  Banning road head?

  • yeah im gonna kill a bunch a people one day…… whats worse is i text while riding my bike, well worst for me anyways. and this time last year i had texting blocked from my phone cause i hated it so much……

  • I thought Ohio has a law that doing anything behind the wheel of a moving motor vehicle besides operating said vehicle was illegal!  Anyone know??

    PS  Don’t forget that driving in the rain without headlights on is now illegal… if wipers are needed so are lights!

  • If they ban texting the I hope they try and ban people from listening to iPods while they drive.

  • Since all the phone have GPS chips in them.  Just make them so they don’t work if you are going over 15 mph

  • This is a dumb law, but not unnecessary.  I’ve been pulled over and got tested for drunk driving because I was texting.  Uggh, dumb move.

    I would think twice about it though if there was a law though, so I think a lot of other people would.

    Anyway, I passed the test and don’t have party plates.  Not that I had been drinking.  I approve this law.

  • Tenzo, that wouldn’t work… it would make it so that people riding in cars, buses, trains and planes wouldn’t be able to text either.

  • So, how does this get enforced? Is it a secondary infractiona dn, if so, how would the cop know I was texting? Are they going to fit cruisers with some kind of interceptor that senses text signals? Seems meaningless to me.

  • I guess they could look at your text history for a timestamp. But one would think that would require a warrant.

  • greenhouse1014 Says: So, how does this get enforced? Is it a secondary infraction?

    Man. I wrote one paragraph and you couldn’t even make it to the third sentence? ;)

  • Tenzo, that wouldn’t work… it would make it so that people riding in cars, buses, trains and planes wouldn’t be able to text either.

    I’m OK with that.
    How many people have been on a bus or plane where there is someone screaming into their phone, in some confused notion that if they can’t hear, then screaming will make the other person’s voice louder?

    Or have you ever been out to dinner and seen the family at the table with the kids texting from entering the resturant to when they leave?

    <sorry, rant>

  • the best is texting on a motorcycle

  • This is a dumb law, but not unnecessary.  I’ve been pulled over and got tested for drunk driving because I was texting.

    wait, you were driving so bad that the cop thought you must be drunk.  And you say it’s not necessary?

  • Tenzo Says: I’m OK with that.

    I think you’re in the wrong thread.

  • I’ve come to the conclusion people are too stupid to be behind the wheel of any motor vehicle.  I’m not sure why it took me so long to discover this…

    More reason to push public transit…

  • I wonder how this would impact tweeting and driving?

  • It just passed in Illinois

    [quote]Gov. Pat Quinn on Thursday signed into law a measure that will bar Illinois motorists from sending text messages while driving in an effort to cut down on distracted driving.

    “It’s really bad that we have to legislate logic,” said Secretary of State Jesse White, who pushed the measure. “Common sense would tell you that when your eyes are off the road, who’s driving?” [/quote}
