A local developer wants to build a hotel in the Short North across from Goodale Park, a major project that also would include a cultural center, office building and parking garage.
Pizzuti Cos. will unveil the project tonight to the Victorian Village Commission. It would occupy nearly an entire block of the Short North that includes the 1920s building housing the Order of the United Commercial Travelers of America, a fraternal society that offers insurance to its members.
Pizzuti Cos.’ preliminary concept for the project includes a 10-story, 160-room hotel fronting High Street, a parking garage with up to 500 spaces, a 40,000-50,000-square-foot office/residential building, Retail space totaling 12,000 square feet, and a cultural center in a restored portion of the United Commercial Travelers building, which faces the park.

Pizzuti proposes Short North hotel

This is what I love about CU. This story was in today’s Dispatch, but broke two days ago on CU thanks to Likes Old Houses.
I love you all. :D
Can’t agree with you more, Walker! :D
On the hotel, this sounds very interesting and exciting. I’m glad they’re building something on that parking lot + putting in a garage. I’m very interested in seeing the drawings of this building. I’m wondering if that parking garage will be underground, or possibly integrated into the actual design of the hotel. I’m also glad to see that they’re keeping the UCT building, restoring it and bringing it to public use. Exciting stuff!! :D
Second!
PS. Paul Bonneville of RetroMetro fame wrote a really nice story about Walker E. and Mike R. in his post. Glad to see you guys getting some regonition for your efforts.
We don’t need a 10 story building next to the park. It’s lovely the way it is. Keep those away from here and deeper in the metro area. The openness of the park is part of it’s beauty. Plus, we don’t need that much more traffic in the area…
there are ten story buildings next to bicentennial park.
Zenperson, are you suggesting a taller building?
I like the two apartment towers next to Franklin Park. They make for interesting contrasts. If you just want short buildings and more green space there are plenty of places for it… may I suggest Dublin or Obetz.
deeper in the metro? Where would that be exactly? Besides it says the 10 story part will face High Street.
I hope someone is going to this meeting tonight and can report back on here tomorrow. I wish I would have read this earlier, I would have def. gone.

No, I’m suggesting no tall buildings around the park. I live across from it and I like it just the way it is. And I don’t just like short buildings… I like tall buildings as well. But, a ten story building around here wouldn’t fit. It’s lovely the way it is with no overshadowing structures.
I’m all for taller buildings against Goodale Park or against High St.; after all, there’s a lot of demand for houses on the park, and there’s no sense in unnecessarily restricting supply. Let as many outsiders become insiders as we can get. The Short North wasn’t meant to be a jewel reserved for the fortunate few.
According to the Dispatch article/graphic, the ten story building will be on High St. in the parking lot between the Yukon Bldg. and The Burgundy Room/Lemongrass building. That’s not ON the park.

a 10 story building fronting high street will be far enough away from the park so as not to overshadow it. that’s a pretty deep lot. i say bring it on. the more density, the better.
Another plus to this is that we’re getting rid of a parking lot.

I don’t think 10 stories is inappropriate for the location either – this is along High St on the edge of downtown. I don’t think views from Central Park would be as impressive without the High Rises which border it. I’m looking forward to some artist renderings.
Hell, the Fireproof building’s further north than this, and it’s probably 10 stories or so, no???
More hotels are needed to bring in larger conventions right? This should help Columbus and the businesses in the area.
Although it’s not as though Betty’s wasn’t packed enough!!!
Although it’s not as though Betty’s wasn’t packed enough!!!
Convention people are adamant that a 500 room hotel is needed to draw larger conventions. If I’m not mistaken this is one of the reasons Columbus was overlooked to host a Party Convention this year – availability and centrality of hotel rooms. The one proposed is a boutique, 160-room hotel.
Well, you get three hotels of this size and you’ve almost got your 500 additional rooms; I guess there’s something to be said for having them all in one place (e.g., a single large hotel is likely to have a large event facility of its own for auxiliary events that could work in tandem with whatever’s going on at GCCC). That said, the room count is what’s most important.
Columbus desperately needs a great boutique hotel. And I would hate to see it go anywhere but the Short North. And Pizzuti certainly knows how to build a building with great architectural features.
I just wish this was where the UDF, Payday Loans, or White Castle parking lot is.
Fireproof is 5 stories, but Bollinger tower in the heart of the SN is 12 stories!
We need 20 of these places on every main aterial of town. 7-10 stroy buildings. High, Broad, Sullivant, Summit, 4th, Niel, Mound, Livingston, Parsons, Lockbourne, Central, Main, 5th, Cleveland, Long, allova!
