Strickland to hire GOP incumbents
Posted by Mercurius on Wed Jul 23, 2008 3:57 pm in Political News
The Columbus Dispatch wrote:
Gov. Ted Strickland might have found a new formula for helping his fellow Democrats capture control of the Ohio House this year: If you can't beat 'em, hire 'em.

Strickland already has been plenty helpful to House Democrats, particularly in their fundraising efforts. Now, in a move that has angered Republicans, he's taking a new tack by hiring away GOP lawmakers in key districts.

In one day, House Republicans lost candidates in two swing seats that suddenly became much more competitive. Democrats need a net pickup of four seats to take control of the chamber for the first time since 1994.

The Strickland administration announced yesterday that it is creating a $115,000 position in the Ohio Department of Development for three-term Rep. Jim Raussen, R-Springdale.

Also yesterday, Sen. Robert F. Spada, R-North Royalton, informed House GOP campaign leaders that he would not seek election to the competitive 18th District in Cuyahoga County. Republicans say they are being told that Strickland also plans to name Spada to a government position, possibly on the State Employment Relations Board.

OH-12's Robinson in Spotlight at ActBlue.com
Posted by travis on Wed Jul 23, 2008 12:52 pm in Political News
For anyone paying attention to the race in Ohio's 12th Congressional District, you probably know that Pat Tiberi (R) is getting $100,000s in support from PACs and special interests for his campaign, as he always has. However, his challenger, David Robinson (D), is raising money the same way as Presidential contender Barack Obama: through small donations from real citizens via the Internet.

Currently, Robinson is on the hot list at ActBlue.com, an official Democrat fund raising site. Anyone motivated and ready for change in this area can support David's lucrative campaign by making a small donation:

The gallery exhibition that Grandview’s Junctionview Studios will play host to this Saturday, July 26, stands significant as being one of the first steps Columbus’ anti-aesthetes are taking to get their work more widely seen. Local collective Cowtown Lowbrow will be presenting “Cowtipping,” featuring well-priced original work for sale that will both raise funds for larger exhibitions across the state, and offer original wares by the artists to add to the multitude of enthusiasts within city limits. Unofficially, it’s also looking to turn out to be a hell of a visually stimulating evening.

Northstar hours to change - for the worse
Posted by Andrew Hall on Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:05 am in Dining News
This morning I was told that NS is not going to be open until 9am starting next month. "Quality of life" for the staff was a phrase I heard.

That really sucks hard. Northstar is our go-to breakfast place for business meetings and, given who I see there like a local elected official this morning, is that way for a lot of people. There is really no substitute.

Strickland's public-school plan gets high marks

Strickland's vision for public-school reform getting high marks

Gov. Ted Strickland's vision of an education system tailored to meet individual student needs with greater opportunity for innovation was well-received by the educators, parents and others who gathered in Columbus today for the governor's first forum on education. "There is a tendency in our schools to emphasize sameness," Strickland said in the 90-minute televised event.

While gathering ideas and taking questions from the crowd of about 200 and e-mails from viewers, Strickland talked about a more interdisciplinary approach, hands-on learning and small-group work.

The forum was the first of a dozen televised “Conversations on Education” that Strickland said will help him prepare a promised education-reform plan. The governor will hold a second round of meetings later this year to discuss how to pay for the proposal.

The owners of the Kickstart, a motor-scooter shop at 913 N. High St., soon will be adding caffeine to the fuel mix. Chris Cannon and Jodi Stully have set up a separate space for a coffee shop, which they expect to open in mid-August.

The coffee will come from Caruso's, a Cleveland-area roaster with a number of central Ohio clients, including on the Ohio State University campus. Also available will be cookies from ABC Cookies in the Arena District and cupcakes from Bakery Gingham in German Village. Cannon said he also is talking with the Short North's Eleni-Christina about other baked goods.

City officials said they would close the Town Street Bridge across the Scioto River in downtown Columbus permanently beginning Tuesday night. The Columbus Public Service Director Mark Kelsey ordered the closure effective 7 p.m. Tuesday, NBC 4 reported.

According to a news release, the decision was made after Kelsey discussed the bridge's latest inspection by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The most recent inspection downgraded the structural condition of the 90-year-old bridge. Bridge inspectors and engineers found "additional deterioration and a noticeable bulge on the arch."

City council agreed Monday night to spend more than $8 million to transform three blocks of S. Front Street into a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly thoroughfare.

Construction work is expected to begin within a few months. Updated sewers and wheelchair ramps, decorative street lights and granite curbs are included in the work, which will involve the block between W. Town and W. Rich streets.

As part of the transformation plan, S. Front Street will also become a two-way street. The street will remain open to traffic during construction.

Clarmont's busy owner puts Thom's up for sale

Clarmont's busy owner puts Thom's up for sale

Thom Coffman has decided to focus all his attention on the venerable Clarmont Restaurant and his plans for its transformation, so he's putting his Thom's on Grandview up for sale.

Coffman opened Thom's 2 1/2 years ago at 1470 Grandview Ave., with an eye toward creating his own brand. He said he's enjoyed the restaurant and liked watching the area around him develop, but his time has become increasingly precious as he moves closer to the start of the Clarmont project.

The plan remains to tear down the 60-year-old structure at 684 S. High St. and build a six-story tower that would include a boutique hotel and condominiums, as well as a thoroughly modern restaurant. But no longer do they include a retail component on the first floor, Coffman said.
