Locals Protest Dakota Access Pipeline in Columbus

A crowd of roughly 100 protestors gathered this afternoon at the intersection of Broad and Third Streets to speak out against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The organized effort is a part of a national “Day of Action,” with 200 events planned to take place across the country. The local effort was coordinated by a group known as “Appalachia Resist.”

While most of the crowd positioned themselves on the public sidewalk in front of the Chase building, one individual blocked traffic by parking his van in the middle of the intersection, handcuffing himself underneath the vehicle. Police and emergency crews took several hours to secure the area, remove the man from under the vehicle, and clear the intersection.

“We know we’re not going to develop any change with 50 people standing outside of Chase Bank, but our main thing is to build momentum towards our further protests,” stated an anonymous protestor to Columbus Underground political writer Lauren Sega during the demonstration. “Just raising social awareness.”

According to the Appalachia Resist website, the group is calling for the withdrawal of Ohio’s State Troopers from North Dakota, the divestment of major banks (including Chase and many others) from the Dakota Access Pipeline, and for the President to halt the DAPL  by revoking the permits of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
