The Grand Opening of the new Scioto Mile park was held this evening with watershows, music, children’s activities, free food, entertainment and more. Thousands of residents, visitors, families and office workers descended upon the new Downtown recreational space to take part in the festivities.
Below are some photos taken this evening of the new Scioto Mile:

Nice! can’t wait to check this out
The best part was when the kids ran out before they cut the ribbon. It really made the space look worth the money because it will be a public space that everyone in the city can use. I’m really excited for the future of that area!
Yes! After the fountain show was delayed because of the extended speech-giving and congratulatory stuff, I think all of the kids were getting extra antsy. A few of them went under the ropes out into it during the show. Then a few more. And a few more. Everyone seemed to be wondering if it was ok or not but then everyone was just kind of like “screw it” and went on in. A really awesome way to say “this park is for the people”. ;)
Or, at least, the little people. :)
Now the next step is try to clean up the gross river that is basically a sewage pit that has warnings posted all along the Scioto Mile to not let the water touch you when it rains.
I did love how the official opening happened after people had been playing in the fountain for 15 minutes.
Loved the fog effect and need to go back at night to see the light show.
The restaurant is all wrong for that area and i predict it will tank within a year and be replaced with a basic hot dog and hamburger joint that aint all fancy smancy. The prices are too high and just plain stupid for that area.
What genius thought a upscale dining area was a good idea for a public gathering place?
This is Columbus Ohio Not NYC.
I really hope this stands the test that the last iteration failed.
DavidRyan614 – Columbus is home to many upscale restaurants. Many of which have been around for quite sometime and are very successful. If you want to be self-deprecating, that’s fine, but no need to drag the whole city down with you. ;)
I do think a second (and third and fourth) restaurant for that location would be beneficial to providing options for visitors to the area. There’s room for multiple businesses to be added nearby.
I wish them the best, but I think Burgers, Dogs, and Fries, was a real missed opportunity at Columbus Commons. I would have loved to see something more creative in that space. I guess they were going for a Shake Shack vibe, but BD&F is no Shake Shack.
So that being said, I’m very happy to see something more interesting at Scioto Mile. I think they’ll do very well there.
My toddler was one of the ones who was sick of all the talking and ran out to the water. I mean come on! Making all those kids wait so long was rather ridiculous. Obviously none of them have had small children for a LONG time.
I agree that it was strange to put an upscale restaurant right there. I was actually rather annoyed, actually. I would have liked to eat (and i’m vegetarian so the hot dog stand they had was worthless) But it was fancy and closed to the public… during a public opening. I understand the need for it, but it could have been the perfect time for a family-friendly restaurant to lure everyone in & make it a place they want to go back and eat. I’m not part of the crowd that ever goes to an upscale place, so I can’t say how well it will do, but if it was a family restaurant I know we would use it pretty often to grab lunch & let the kid play in the water.
Hopefully there will be some food carts or something able to make that place a bit of a meal time destination.. or if the place does poorly the replacement will match the kind of people who will actually be drawn to the water area. How far a walk is dirty frank’s from there? They need to put the fountain area (does it have a name?) on google maps. I have NO idea what part of the park it is in in order to map it…
Milestone was only closed for a private reception until 7:30pm and then open to the public after that.
I keep hearing this talk of it being an upscale restaurant, but has anyone bothered to look at the prices on the menu? They have sandwiches in the $9 to $11 range and entrees from $10 to $14:

“I keep hearing this talk of it being an upscale restaurant, but has anyone bothered to look at the prices on the menu?”
Agreed.. I was confused as well by the “upscale” comments. It’s a nice space, and the prices and menu are very much in the middle (imo- perfect for this location). The area needed something like this. I agree with mbeaumont, that it’s really nice to have something different/interesting here.
Does anyone know if the fountain shows and light shows will be every day? or if there is a schedule. I can’t find anything on the Scioto Mile website or facebook page.
Look at the Lunch menu and entrees are $14.25 to $22.95 BUT I will say that a bottle of bud for 3.25 is a good deal.
Upscale is a bit much but it sure aint faimily friendly prices and the food sure is not what kids would want to eat.
The restaurant looks cool and I will be going to at least try the Lemon Ice-Box Parfait but it I just do not see it as a good fit for a childrens play area.
Now what they have at Columbus Commons http://www.columbuscommons.org/visit/cafe/ I think would be a better fit and i am sure by next year they will have a duplicate built.
It was cool to have three bands playing at the Commons, Bicentennial and Genoa Park all at the same time.
I wonder if the lunch & dinner menu PDFs got reversed on their website then. Generally lunch isn’t more expensive than dinner. If that’s the case then it sounds a little bit higher than an average price, but not in the same pricepoint range as other fine dining establishments around town.
If you need a place to take kids though, Jury Room isn’t too far away. ;)
Bethia – Not sure on the fountain/light shows. I would hope they would be on every night. I imagine they’re unmanned and pre-programed.
The lunch entrees are $10.50 to $13.50 with sandwiches between $9.25 to $10.50

It does look like the swapped PDF’s around, it’s fixed now. Dinner has the same sandwiches but with different entrees ranging from $14.25 to $22.95

Seems like it’s more of a mid-range price point, defiantly not upscale pricing. If you want upscale check M at Miranova right next door that has been there for years as proof the area can sustain fine dining.

I’m very happy it’s not another Burgers, Dogs and Fries that will close after lunch Mon-Fri like the Columbus Commons. What I think they were looking for was an affordable restaurant destination for the SM and not a cheap forgettable fries/burgers restaurant.
Also, the cafe (if still open?) in Bicentennial Plaza could serve this lower cost demand.
