Downtown doesn’t offer dogs much room to romp, but now there’s a plan to find them some.

The proposed dog park at Spring and N. 4th streets would be in a small triangle at the southeast corner, now a green patch just big enough for a dog to run a couple of short laps and do his business.

The one at 4th and Spring would cost up to $45,000. It would have a pea-gravel surface, a wrought iron fence, a couple of benches and waste receptacles.

Wood said a mix of private donations and, he hopes, city money would pay for the park.

  • Nice idea. I’m glad that they understand that they’ll need 3 or 4 of these in a downtown the size of ours.

This was actually my favorite part of the article since I live so close…

The city has talked to Franklin County Metro Parks about a possible dog park on the redeveloped Whittier Peninsula, said Mark Young, assistant Columbus parks director.

I also think that the area of Schiller over by the baseball diamond (that never gets used for baseball, but always gets used by dogs) would make a great dog park. It could be done with wrought iron fences to keep with the feel of the park.

  • I think the term “patch” and “dog park” are mutually exclusive.

What’s downtown living without a place to take your dog? Well, coming soon at the corner of N. 4th St. and E. Spring St. is the Columbus Downtown Dog Park.

Although City Council seems to be inching toward laws that would make a dog’s life more complicated, Downtown dog owners say their pets exist comfortably in the center of the city.

Most of the new condo developments allow pets, but living with a dog Downtown does require some lifestyle adjustments. Pugh said he was initially worried about moving the dog from a house with a backyard to a condo, but the transition has gone swimmingly, he said.

  • I love the sign.

  • An actual little sculpture of dogs would be cute too.

  • So am I correct in that the dog park would be the existing TINY patch of grass between Spring St and the geye-normous parking just to the south of it? This is almost an insult if that is the city’s idea of a dog park. You could have 4-6 dogs in that tiny area at a time at most and even still they could really do anything.

Yes, you are correct. The important thing to remember is that there is not any enforcement of leash laws. Moose loves the riverfront. His favorite is the fountain at North Bank Park (the one that randomly shoots water up out of the patio.) I would recommend finding the other downtown dog owners and just making your own park. There is also Goodale, which has an official dog park with twenty or thirty dogs when it is nice and Wolfe Park in Bexley is an official dog park with usually five or six dogs.

    Wait, who’s idea is this?

  • I do not like dogs. Much less support gov’t sanctioned land for them.

I feel the same way about the homeless.

Thanks to the City and to The Downtown Residents Association, it’s a done deal. Park Benches, fences, it’s ready to go when your dog is.

  • That’s about the most pitiful thing I’ve ever seen.

    Why bother?

p.s. Maybe I misunderstood…did Downtown buy a dog? If so, this is a great yard for it. What kind of dog did they buy? I want to know more…

  • I thought it actually turned out better than I thought it would. I was concerned about how it would feel to play around right there with the traffic coming into that curve, but I think the fence will help.

The location is a bit weird though. I guess it’s somewhat central, but I don’t think there’s enough residential around it yet. I’m sure the dog owners in 60 Spring and ConneXtions will enjoy it though.

Wait, it’s better Walker…I talked to the owners, we’re putting this in:

Now it’s the playground serving all children in downtown.

Prolly have to enjoy it one at a time though… only enough room for one dog at a time

That might be the smallest dog park in the country. I calculated 0.06 acres. The city should acquire the adjacent parking lot to expand it or buy the one across the street.

If that’s the trend for dog parks, then I can’t wait until they make us leash our dogs in Schiller and then I can invite all the dogs to my back yard (which is about the size of this dumb park!)

I wasn’t trying to say that this is a good record to have and I certainly hope it’s not a trend. This thing looks very sad.

  • Wow, you bike riders dog owners sure are a picky bunch.

Seriously though… I agree that it’s small. But I haven’t really seen too many Great Danes living in the 500 sq ft condos nearby.

I’m not trying to defend this as “The Greatest Dog Park in the History of Dog Parks” but it’s hardly as bad as people are making it sound. I’d love to hear from some of the people who live nearby and might actually use it. I’m sure there are several who are members of DRAC who had a lot of say in how this was built. Are THEY happy with it? Isn’t that what matters?
