Officially, the owners of the Happy Greek make money by selling $5.50 gyro sandwiches and other assorted Mediterranean fare at the popular Short North restaurant.
But law-enforcement officials think that below the surface — in the restaurant’s basement office — the owners ran a multimillion-dollar mortgage-fraud ring that involved foreigners buying houses in elite central Ohio neighborhoods.
Investigators descended last week on the Happy Greek, a home the owners share and the apartment of a property appraiser.
In simultaneous searches, they seized computers, mortgage files, counterfeit cash, phony immigration documents and fake driver’s licenses, according to affidavits and evidence logs filed in Franklin County Municipal Court.
Nobody has been arrested or charged.

I used to love this place. Then I got really bad service the last time I went there for dinner. Maybe they were too busy running mortgage scams in the basement to get my order correct.
Wow, thats some serious shit. Karma is a bitch.
HAHA those people just bought and moved into the house next door to my parents. (the Riverside Dr. address) My mom said they were very nice :p
Now we know why they were “Happy”!
Geez… well, if they are charged, arrested, and convicted, I sure hope whoever inherits the Happy Greek maintains it as is. Their dip sampler is superb.
Yeah, I hope this situation doesn’t close down the places. One of my favorite places in town. Short North location. Gateway, not so much.
FWIW, I still miss George’s old Souvlaki Palace from the OSU days. That is one Steak and Steak location I will never patronize.
