Did you catch Monday night’s episode of No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain? You probably noticed an Austin band, UME, on the travel show’s first episode of their last season. I actually spoke with the lead singer/guitar whaler/long-blonde-hair-swinging/badass Lauren Larson a few months ago before Bunbury. Yeah, I’ve slacked a bit. Sorry about it. Anyway, after Bunbury the band went on tour with Helmet and The Toadies for an adventure that included a broken down van, and a date opening up for a band that should just retire already, Jane’s Addiction.
Larson, along with her husband/bass player Eric, and drummer Rachel Fuhrer, who was recently featured in DRUM! has come so far since I spoke with Lauren in July. Larson and Columbus’ own Lydia Loveless both have their husbands in their bands. The UME singer says she doesn’t get sick of having her partner with her but says, “being in a band with anybody is deep, and I consider myself very lucky”.
After telling me about some of their plans to record a demo for a producer for Queens of the Stone Age, as well as going to Rancid shows as a teenager, I felt a tingle in my pants and knew I wanted to be this woman’s best friend. You can “relive” their episode as well as see Mr. Bourdain at SXSW in Austin at www.travelchannel.com.
“Captive” is one of my favorite songs by the trio:
Unfortunately the closest gig to Columbus is in Nebraska, but I am seriously thinking about the trip.
“I always try to hold nothing back”, Larson says.
