Owner Mary Coleman began practicing yoga in 2004 on her own at a gym and with videos. In 2008 she began to study with Laurel Hodory privately on a weekly basis, which she continued for three years. In 2011 she took Yoga Teacher’s Training to become a certified teacher. On The Square Yoga will be Coleman’s first yoga studio.

“I have been fortunate enough to be mentored by some wonderful teachers and people who encouraged me to follow the path of my heart,” says Coleman. “This is the path of my heart.”

Coleman was, as she says, “a reluctant transplant from New England.” Now she loves Columbus.

“Columbus has won me over. The people are phenomenal. The city itself is fantastic. We have arts, education, lots of creativity in business and a strong sense of what is right.”

“I chose downtown Columbus [for my studio] because I know first-hand how important getting some “time-out” of the stress of the work-day is,” she says. “I wanted to make yoga accessible to people who worked downtown – Capital Square is dead-center in the middle of it!”

Coleman worked in law offices for over twenty-five years before discovering how wonderful yoga is for your body, mind, and soul.

“I am no different that anyone else in that for many years I neglected myself (body and soul),” she says. “I ate food that wasn’t good for me. I didn’t exercise. I worked all the time. I ignored my emotions and ran away from confrontation. I had relationships that were not healthy. I always put the needs of others before my own. I believed that I wasn’t worthy of caring for myself. Yoga (not just the physical postures but also the philosophies that go with it) helped me to understand that I am a divine soul incarnate in this body. It also helped me to discover what my sacred path is: to help others heal their brokenness. There are many ways to heal but for me yoga was the tool that allowed the door to open to many other things.”

She believes convenience, consistency of offerings, and compassion will set her yoga studio apart from others.

“I have two elements of my philosophy: 1) Everyone can have a yoga practice regardless of their perceived physical limitations; 2) Yoga can heal our broken bodies and hearts. I also feel that first and foremost, yoga should be safe and supportive to individual. While it is okay to push our boundaries, we can only push our boundaries if we truly know ourselves.”

On The Square Yoga will offer drop-in classes at $15 per class (pay online and get it for $13). If you purchase a 5 or 10 class pass, the per class rate drops to $12. If you purchase during opening week (February 4-8), all regular classes are $10. Classes are currently offered Monday through Friday.

For those looking for a respite in the middle of the day to relax and then build-up some energy to get you going for the afternoon, there will be mid-day classes available during the lunch hour.

An Open House at On The Square Yoga will take place on Monday, February 4th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This will be a chance for you to become familiar with the studio, ask questions, and sign up for classes. Special deals occurring during opening week: all classes are only $10 (regularly $15), 5-Class Passes only $50 (regularly $65), 10-Class Passes only $100 (regularly $125), and Just Starting Out (Beginner’s Series) only $75 for 6-week series (normally $125).
