Old Bag of Nails in Bexley

By: Motorist

Has anyone been by the new building going up to replace the old Old Bag that burned down last year? I haven’t found a picture online of it or gone by to take on myself but, wow, that thing looks awful. They do have what looks like a pretty large deck on the creek side of the building.

They also have a fountain/waterfall that goes down the bank of the creek. I’m not sure how they were allowed to build it, I’m sure there have to be regulations about building fountains in creeks like that. It’s probably a closed loop fountain so they aren’t dumping potable water into the creek but I would think there are other concerns there. Anyone have any further information about this?

The funny thing about the fountain is that it is on the same side of the creek as the deck so I don’t think you can see it from the deck. You can see it as you are coming down Broad Street from Bexley. I heard through the grapevine that the goal of the new building was to look nice from Bexley, which would explain why the side on Nelson Road looks like poop.

  • Uh…good for Bexley?

  • I live right by there. I don’t think the building looks so bad. It fits in with the brick facades of the other buildings along nelson (not an area known for its open and inviting architecture.

The river side of the restaurant is only visible from a little part of E Broad st,and the St Charles campus. Unless their trying to appeal to High School seniors or the football booster club, your Bexley appeal theory may be more rich-people-phobia than anything else.

I’m just really excited to have a bar that I can walk to from my house.

  • I’m just glad I’m going to once again have a place to get a fried pickle so close to my house… while watching the bizarro water feature :)

The new building is stucco with splotches of fake stone.

What about the fake dormer on the roof? They didn’t even bother to put a fake window in there, they just stuccoed over the whole damn thing. I can only hope there is a sign going up there.

Not phobia, mostly contempt. Wait till you see that puppy lit up at night, you’ll be able to see it from further down Broad.

I’ve always thought the food at Old Bag was good and most of their restaurants have character. Maybe the inside of this one will be nice. I do have to commend them for rebuilding in a part of the Near East Side (I’m pretty sure it is actually in the City of Columbus, not City of Bexley) that is pretty dead and cut-off from it’s surroundings.

  • they are in Columbus proper.

    Regardless, I have high hopes.

    MMMM Fried Pickles!!! :D

  • I’ve been driving past that building for months and had no idea what it was. I was almost convinced it was a mini kiddie pool place or something.

  • I was wondering what happened with OBN. Great food, especially the fish and chips.

What if it’s on the interweb?

  • I have always wondered about the fire. It just seems to me like this new place is a MUCH better deal for the future of OBN than the last setting was. It all seems pretty fishy to me. Nonetheless, the food is great, and it will be nice to have them open again.

You guys are mostly hilarious.

I live in Bexley. Motorist drives by honking his horn obnoxiously in protest every time he passes my house.

  • I had dinner with friends at the other location on Sunday. Nice place. I’d eat there again.

best fish and chips you will get in town. Well maybe just the fish part, the chips are…. whatever

  • they have a bunch of locations.

the fried pickels are the best. way better than rusty bucket and marshalls

  • I always confuse the Rusty Bucket & the Ol’ Bag of Nails. Both make me think of rust & shards of metal in my food. Not that I think any sort of thing would happen, I’m just sayin…

Me? I’m going to the Rotted Railroad Tie for a bite later…
