From This Week News:
Oktoberfest could move to village
By David J CrossEach year, it’s common to hear people question why one of the German Village Society’s major events isn’t held in the village. Those people may just get their wish.
Bill Curlis, a society trustee and event chair, announced during a board of trustees meeting Monday that the nonprofit group is hoping to bring Oktoberfest back to German Village.
Curlis was careful to stress that no plans have been finalized; however, he said the society wants to hold its annual Oktoberfest on South Third Street between Beck and Frankfort streets. The event is scheduled to take place Oct. 2-4.

Oktoberfest could move to village

If Oktoberfest doesn’t go to GV I definitely won’t be going again this year. Last year at Genoa Park seemed so sterile, especially in comparison with the Greek Festival. There wasn’t even really anything German about it except for Schmidt’s. I bought a German flag from a Polish guy.
I live in the North end of VV. During Comfest, parking becomes extremely limited. I arrange so that I don’t have to use a car during that weekend. It’s a great time, I love seeing all the people in the neighborhood.
As LaChewla says and I agree, the typical annoyances of daily life are much worse than festival or event side effects.
As a resident of GV I am totally excited to see Ocktoberfest coming to the Village. I’d like to see the neighborhood packed with people… it would be good for local businesses, and good for the neighborhood. It’s one weekend a year… I can’t wait!

The letter stated that the society needs permission from 80 percent of the property owners to shutdown the streets for four days.

The pressure is on the German Village Society to convince 40 property owners that S. 3rd Street would be a good location for Oktoberfest this year.
“Your approval is absolutely essential; we, literally, cannot hold the event without your approval,” event chairman and society trustee Bill Curlis wrote in a letter to property owners.
“And yes, I am begging here, because there can be no Oktoberfest in 2009 if we do not get your signature,” he wrote.

I can’t believe the Book Loft wouldn’t want tens of thousands of pedestrians at their doorstep. Especially when its accessible from City Park as well as 3rd.
And I think G Michaels would do just fine. I’m not sure what the qoute about their clientele not wanting to wade through the crowd meant – rich folks don’t like to polka? They could make bank if they did a special Oktoberfest menu and put a simple sign out front saying as much.
Yeah, I can’t see this being anything but a packed weekend for area businesses.
