Ohio’s Own: Let It Yo… (Snowville Yogurt Part II)

A little over a year ago, Snowville Creamery’s yogurt hit the market. It was offered in two flavors: plain and vanilla.

True to Snowville form, the vanilla and plain yogurts were outlandishly creamy; divine, even. But in a world where lots of yogurts earn crowns of gummi worms and oreo crumbles, the un-polluted yogurts had a limited audience.

Well, now the creamery has gone all Jeni’s on us, with funky flavors that might not convert the fro-yo crowd, but they sure do open up a whole new world of delicious.

Most outstanding is the Turmeric Mace version. It’s golden yellow, it’s sugary sweet, and it’s sealed under a half-inch thick layer of congealed cream. Forget fruit on the bottom: Snowville has cream on top.

Because of the yellow hue and yogurt’s natural tartness, the blend with turmeric might come across as related to something in the lemon family – only with a fuller body and a richer, more luscious flavor. Turmeric might be a familiar seasoning; mace is a cousin to nutmeg.

There’s also a Coffee Cardamom flavor: it takes on more exotic, aromatic characteristics in a sweet, coffee yogurt. And yes, that luscious lid of cream is right there topping this version too. Both flavored yogurts boast eight percent butterfat.

For those who get into live cultures, the yogurts have Lactobacillus bulgaricus Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis: appetizing. If that doesn’t sound impressive, it’s worth knowing that the other ingredients listed are limited to natural things such as milk, cream, cane sugar, and the spices mentioned in each version’s name.

Plus, Snowville says that coffee, cardamom and turmeric all contain antioxidants, so there’s the anti-cancer angle too. You don’t get that from gummi worm toppings.

Still on the to-try list is Lemon Ginger: it’s the third flavor in the trio of cream-topped dessert yogurts. All of them come from Snowville Creamery in Pomeroy, Ohio.
