Ohio Roller Girls 2009 Season Home Opener

By:

The Ohio Roller Girls will be showcasing its new teams for Columbus fans as it debuts the first home game of the 2009 season in Grandview Heights. The Ohio Roller Girls will be facing off versus the up-and-coming North Star Roller Girls (Minneapolis, Minn.) March 21.

The bout versus North Star will be held at the Central Ohio Roller Hockey, 941 Burrell Ave. Doors open at 3 p.m. with the game time at 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $10 and can be purchased online at www.ohiorollergirls.com.

Both Ohio Roller Girls teams are looking for their first wins of the 2009 season after falling to the Steel City Derby Demons (Pittsburgh) in non-conference action. The Ohio Roller Girls lost its February bout 98-125 while the OHRG Gang Green fell in a close match against the Steel City B-Unit 69-70.

The Ohio Roller Girls recently made the decision to restructure the league from four home teams to two travel teams in order to become a more competitive league on a national level. As members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the Ohio Roller Girls and the North Star Roller Girls will be fighting to better their position in the WFTDA North Central Region. The top teams in the region will be invited to the North Central Regional tournament.

Due to decreased capacity at our new venue this season, we expect this event to sell out — get your tickets early at www.ohiorollergirls.com.

  • On my to do list: Finally make it to an Ohio Roller Girls Game.

Who wants to join me? ;)

  • Dagwood Challenge followed by some Roller Girls entertainment. Can’t beat that!

  • I’m SO there!  I’ve been a big fan of OHRG for the last two seasons and am now really tempted to use ECE as an excuse to travel out to Philly as a fan.  When is the team playing DC?

  • No plans to play DC on the books right now, but it’s entirely possible in the future.  We’ve got Dayton, Ft Wayne, Indianapolis, Sioux Falls and Akron on the schedule right now, with a few more coming most likely.

ECE is a fantastic event, if you are at all a derby fan. This year we only have one game there, which is against Montreal (int’l derby yay!) and it’s Friday night, which means we actually get to watch all day Saturday and Sunday!

  • Let me also note, we have open recruitment going on currently, so if anyone is interested in skating (21 and over females only, although those of either gender can ref) then hit us up via the contact page on our website.

  • If anyone is planning on coming, and hasn’t purchased a ticket, now is the time to do so. As of right now, there are 21 tickets left, so I expect this one to sell out by end of today.
