Horse tracks seeking slots without a vote
By James NashEven as out-of-state developers pitch a plan for casinos in Ohio’s four largest cities, the state’s ailing horse tracks are going to the legislature with a proposal for thousands of slot machines at their facilities. The seven tracks, including Scioto Downs south of Columbus and Beulah Park in Grove City, could get slot machines without going to the public for approval.

This isn’t the first time our horse tracks have sought slot machines. Although it sounds like they’re taking a different approach to it this year.

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Louis Blessing said he’ll introduce legislation this week to put 2,000 slot machines at each of Ohio’s seven horse tracks, including River Downs in Anderson Township and Lebanon Raceway in Warren County.
Possible bankruptcy of Ohio horse tracks makes passing state legislation this year more urgent than ever, according to Blessing.

Although Ohioans have rejected gambling in four statewide elections, a group of bar and restaurant owners is trying to sell state leaders on the merits of allowing voters to approve slot machines in their backyards.
Instead of a statewide vote, the Northern Ohio Hospitality and Entertainment Coalition wants Ohioans to be able to vote by precinct on whether to allow slot machines in local bars, restaurants, horse-racing tracks and churches.
