  • Anyone planning on attending this? Is it even open to the public?

  • Stimulus solution for Ohio city short-lived

President Barack Obama celebrates a stimulus victory Friday in Ohio that could be short-lived at best.

Twenty-five Columbus police recruits whose jobs were saved by $1.25 million in federal stimulus dollars will barely account for expected retirements this year.

The problem could get worse: The department could shrink by next year because the city, citing the economy, hasn’t scheduled a new recruiting class for the first time in at least a decade.

  • Seems like such a hollow and transparent political thing to me. No thanks.

The families of Columbus’ newest police officers and their colleagues on the force will make up about half the audience today for President Barack Obama’s visit to the city.

Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will attend the graduation ceremony this morning for 26 recruits whose jobs were saved by Columbus’ first share of federal economic-stimulus money.

  • I just got an email from a friend who said that Obama was spotted having lunch at Lindey’s in German Village. ;)

  • This whole sitch was one of the best political tug-o-wars I’ve seen in recent memory.  When the PD Union held firm to their position, it  backed the mayor  into a corner.  What public official wants to be responsible for firing police BEFORE they finish training ?!?  It would be political suicide (just ask former Cleveland Mayor, Mike White).

Coleman held his ground, so did the Union – and the class was to be laid-off.

Enter the true HNIC (yeah, I said it), he needs to get a good photo op for the ga-zillion dollar stimulus bill, (cue the Superman theme) swoops in and saves the day!

So we end up with a triple-win: The Prez, The Mayor, and the Police.  It was impressive.  I can’t remember when local and national politics played out so clearly or so closely to home.

My only complaint: they didn’t open it to the public.
