I’ve parked for the past 2 years behind Frog Bear down in the arena with my little 150cc scooter. Today I got a note reading:
“In the future, please do not park scooters or motorcycles in or around the bike racks. NRI has requested that we start warning folks about it. A printed policy will be forthcoming.”
What is that all about? Do people really think that scooters parked in the bike rack back there are an eye sore?

oops
I read the letter. It referred to the old vs new scooter mentality and made the point that old scooters are not environmentally friendly.
i think the law states that any wheeled vehicle is prohibited from sidewalks, except those aiding the handicapped. that’s whay there’s been some talk over which group segways fall into.
I thought there was some exception for under X years old too, like 16 year olds and under on a bicycle.
Hmm, I sense energy use guilt.
In the simplest statement, I repeat;
“Burning energy that is not your own is not environmentally friendly.”
I was hoping we could get a screenshot of the bicycle you’re pedalling hooked up to a generator to power up the computer for this post….

After the article, read the comments. There’s plenty of critique of their research.
true dat, everything is debatable
The scooter parking issue seems simple but it’s not. No bikes or motorized vehicles on sidewalks is the local law, but you may walk your bike along the sidewalk.
Last year a cyclist/scooter enthusiast on city council worked with the police department on the scooter ticketing problem, and CPD conceded that motorized mopeds–the kind with pedals–would be exempt from the bike rack prohibition. But hardly anyone rides mopeds, even though they have a high geek-cool factor and get a zillion mpg.

No. Bicycles are allowed on the sidewalk in Ohio code. Local authorities may decide otherwise, but can’t mandate bikes be on the sidewalk.

Columbus City Codes

(ORC 4511.01(G)) (Ord. 787-90.)
2101.19 Motorcycle defined.
“Motorcycle†means every motor vehicle other than a tractor, having a saddle for the use of the operator and designed to travel on not more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground, including, but not limited to motor vehicles known as “motor-driven cycles,†“motor scooter,†or “motorcycle†without regard to weight or brake horsepower. (ORC 4511.01(C)) (Ord. 599-78: Ord. 2120-03 § 1 (part).)
Thanks roy, thought that was the case, as I’ve had many people speed cycle through Schiller and then yell that the dogs are in their way…when they aren’t supposed to be there in the first place.

Thanks for tracking that down. Nice work. I’m impressed with anyone who can make their way to something useful in the legalese of the Ohio code.
Anyone remember the name of the Council member who tried to work with Columbus police on the scooter parking? I’m trying to write a story on this problem.

Up until a few weeks ago, Jamey Fauque would ride his scooter from his home in Grandview to his job Downtown, parking at a bike rack behind the Frog Bear & Wild Boar Bar in the Arena District.
It seemed a good fit: His 150cc scooter took up little more space than an average bicycle, and a nearby metal rail gave him a place to lock up.
Soon, though, Nationwide Realty Investors, which controls the property, left the following note: “In the future, please do not park scooters or motorcycles in or around the bike racks. NRI has requested that we start warning folks about it. A printed policy will be forthcoming.”
These scooter parking concerns have been echoed elsewhere in the city, as scooters and other two-wheeled automotive alternatives become more popular among residents eager to cut carbon emissions.

I hope they aren’t excluding motorcycles from the definition of scooter. many ride motorcycles to save gas as well to save money and the environment and to also allieviate traffic congestion, yet you aren’t even allowed to park motorcycles in most parking garages in columbus.
Bigger cities allow sidwalk parking as long as it doesn’t impede foot taffic. this does 2 things, reduce congestion and allow for more street parking for cars, and encourages more environmentally friendly modes of transportation
How about this:
