NRI Squashing Scooter Parking

By: Griz28

I’ve parked for the past 2 years behind Frog Bear down in the arena with my little 150cc scooter. Today I got a note reading:

“In the future, please do not park scooters or motorcycles in or around the bike racks. NRI has requested that we start warning folks about it. A printed policy will be forthcoming.”

What is that all about? Do people really think that scooters parked in the bike rack back there are an eye sore?

  • Scooters block the bike racks from the intended users?

I do realize it is an issue as people have been know to physically move scooters from parking spaces and there needs to be a better overall solution. OTOH, from a cyclist perspective, even small scoots take more than a single bike worth of slots in the typical bike rack.

Why don’t you write them a nice letter or call?

    A.

In my two years down there I have barely ever seen the bike racks fill up though. And a small scooter just takes up one spot down there just like a bike does.

Scooters are environmentally friendly alternatives to driving (I get over 80 miles to the gallon) and I think NRI should be encouraging it.

  • Please park motorcycles, scooters, and other motorized vehicles in the garage with all the cars and trucks.

Fuel efficient, yes. Environmentally friendly, no.

Come on, compared to other commuting alternatives, of course they are. Granted, they’re not riding a bike and tossing apple seeds over each shoulder as they go, but at 80 MPG they’re certainly doing a lot more than your average commuter in helping the environment.

  • This is something I’ve often wondered about while contemplating the purchase of a scooter… do you park in a parking spot and take up a whole car spot and piss of car drivers, or do you park on the sidewalk near bike racks and piss of the cyclists?

I guess Columbus could probably just use more dedicated motorcycle and scooter parking.

Oh over here you offer kudos about helping the environment.

  • i drive a car, when its far or i need to haul ass or my kid,

ride the scoot, whens it too far to walk, but not close enough to ride the bike, ride the bike when its close enough but too far to walk,

    and walk for the rest.

i park my car legally, my bike i lock up, park my ass at the destination, but the scooter, that has “special places”.

i lock it up because jackasses like to steal them, so i dont park in the lot, except under special circumstances, so whats left? a pole or the bike rack. bikes use those too, so i’m not the asshole thats going to eat up all your rack space or pole space, but i’ll park my scooter wherever i can get a piece, without being a jerk, and i’ll do so as long as i can get away with it. i wont park in the garage because its not out in the open, thus making it even easier to steal.

its sensible, and as long as i’m considerate, i dont see the problem. so if it bugs you just to see it there, in your space, give me a break, it aint easy trying to please everyone. but i’ll get there faster (depending on your skills) and can haul more than you can on your bike, like other people, when i need to.

  • Maybe they were told to do so by the city because of some weird zoning code?

  • yeah, where does it end though.

motorcycles? mine is small. as much as i would like to park on the sidewalks and whatnot, it’s pushing it, even for a scooter.

the perpendicular bike/scooter parking can usually get you in between paid spaces with no consequence though, at least for motorbikes.

  • I think motorcycles parking there are what spurred the crackdown actually. A sports bike and a big Triumph cruiser just started parking there over the past weeks. I do have to admit that they looked pretty out of place next to the bikes.

So does anyone know an alternative place to park near the Arena district, without having to pay $70 a month for a garage?

  • Cyclist wrote Please park motorcycles, scooters, and other motorized vehicles in the garage with all the cars and trucks.

    Bullshit.

I’ve never parked the scooter at a bikerack…? But I don’t park in car parking spaces either! On the sidewalk near a newstand or telephone pole maybe…just out of the way of pedestrians and not using up a whole parking space.

The motorcycle can be parked near cars in a parking lot, but in those little triangle spaces on the ends, or wherever is clever.

Two wheelers should respect other two wheelers regardless.

    Exactly!

  • i was told by a ‘friendly’ traffic cop who was ticketing my scoot that anything with a license plate is illegal on city sidewalks. but it does present a bit of an issue, because as others state I don’t want to take up an entire parking space.

Now that makes sense. You should write a letter to them or give them a call as I said earlier. It is a chance to engage them and find a good solution for all two wheelers.

Don’t you need a motorcycle license for a scoot? That may make it hard for them to discriminate between scoots and bikes which led to a blanket ban.

    A.

anything above 50cc needs a motorcycle license

  • Very selfishly I would like it if they would just allow vehicles 150cc or less to park there. You could justify that because a vehicle that size only takes up one bike spot…not 2 like the bigger bikes and scoots. I’ll have to try and figure out the proper person to talk to at NRI. Luckily, I work in Nationwide…I’ll do some research today.

My Honda 919′s wheelbase is 7″ longer than a Vespa PX150.

smoking has virtually zero effect on the environment. The effect on automobiles, however, is significant. You’re so worried about carcinogens in the air, walking by that smoker for a few minutes outside isn’t what you should worry about.

  • Ndcent wrote My Honda 919′s wheelbase is 7″ longer than a Vespa PX150.

Wheelbase is to the center of each wheel, so a 919 would stick out an extra foot and a half farther than a Vespa. The small scooters are about the same length as an average mountain bike.
