Two new businesses are opening shop at the North Market while two others are going through some upgrades.
The Candy Shack has opened up next to The Fish Guys on the north end of the building, providing a selection of high quality bulk candies and a variety of nostalgic candies.
Holy Smoke BBQ has taken over the former Jose Madrid Salsa space and will provide a selection of barbecued items including brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and ribs as well as a variety of side dishes.
CaJohn’s CaBoom Chill Company is moving their prepared food items over to share space with Holy Smoke BBQ, and expanding their selection of sauces, spices and salsas in their current spot. They’ll also be expanding their menu to include new chilis, soups, enchiladas, chili dogs, and other daily specials.
Barry’s New York Deli has just wrapped up their renovations that include the building of a new kitchen area, new counters and fixtures, as well as a new “to go” case for customers to grab several prepared items more quickly.

Double approve. Oh please let this be amazing BBQ. I already love CaJohn’s.
My problem with Barry’s was the quality of the meat, not the appearance of his place.

I’ve been really impressed with the quality and continued improvement of the Greener Grocer. They have an excellent assortment of products from different sources and methods of cultivation (organic, pesticide free, local, etc.) I really love how much they try to label the origins of each product too!
They are also making the North Market more of a grocery store for downtown by providing milk, eggs, and flour. I know these are available elsewhere, but the Greener Grocer has pulled it of well. They also exhibit that ever important dollar diversity in their selection. You can buy things a a variety of price points, which is great for shoppers, and it helps them live up to their ethics and mission.
They are the only place that sells Snowville heavy whipping cream which I use to make butter.
They also use compostable bags and paper bags, and I think pay a living wage(?).
A+ Greener Grocer!
I had some awesome Challah [sic?] from Omega yesterday too!
I still haven’t bought from any vendors packaging in styrofoam for months.
Whole Foods (Sawmill and Lane Ave.) sells it as well, not that I expect you to go there, but for others who are interested.

Thanks, I figured someplace else did too. Greener Grocer is the only place I have seen it sold in the city though. Whole Foods is outside the city.
Does it concern anyone else that Snoville’s rapid expansion from farm markets and specialty grocers to major distributors will force them to start cutting corners, buying from other farms and losing quality control – etc? I’m a little worried about that myself; hope I’m wrong.
Guess I’m not a very good capitalist.
I would like to see more grocery than prepared food in the North Market.. It’s hard to get everything for a meal at the north market. Especially things like spices and many dried herbs.
I’d also like to +1 any props to the Greener Grocer. They really have stepped things up especally given their limited space and budget. The small cooler they put in means that they can keep more fresh stock on hand. I know that when I come down they’ll probably have some great produce for me.
Zack didn’t mention that GG also now carries 2 Silos eggs. I’m so happy to have a source for these great eggs in actual dozens (WF sells them loose), especially since Sunflower went out of business. I also get some of my firewood at greener grocer as well.
My only issue with less prepared food – is that for those of us who work in the area, we would lose one of the best places to get a great quick lunch from a small business that is local and easily accessible. As well, as reasonably priced.
Yes, I love the fact that I can get many items under one roof to prepare a meal, but I also love that I can run in and find any number of items for lunch/dinner as well, which will satisfy both myself and my husband. That is what makes the North Market so great.

Looking at their website it would seem like they’ve built their business to expand rapidly into a local market without compromising quality.
On one hand it looks like they’re betting long term on high energy costs leveling the playing field for them.. IMHO it’s not a bad long term bet..
On the other hand, quality is part of the branding. They are marketing to a segment of the population that is concerned about the quality of their dairy products and who are looking for a superior product. The day the quality falls is they day they lose their advantage.
so.. I’m not really that concerned…
The niche market organic milks have been hamstrung by high production, distribution and transportation costs. UHT sterilization is a more expensive and energy hungry process with higher packaging costs. We believe that the continuing decline in per capita fluid milk consumption will be reversed in any markets where such a product is economically available. Instead of a high dollar, low volume, niche milk, this is intended to compete directly with high volume low priced commodity grocery store milk.
We believe that the large grocery store chains, such as Kroger, will recognize the benefit of having this premium local milk to differentiate them from Wal-Mart. Wal Mart is the largest seller of organic milk, but it is nearly all UHT sterilized 55-day shelf-life milk. Kroger stands to gain considerably by attracting customers with a truly more delicious and wholesome locally produced milk at a cost closer to commodity store milk than to organic.
We buy Snowville because it tastes better more than any other reason. The variety of points of sale only helps them.

I think what Cyclist was getting at is that not all retail outlets that carry Snowville milk carry the heavy cream as well. Personally, I’d love to see them pack their half and half and heavy cream in smaller containers. Because it is so fresh, it’s also pretty perishable, and even with making butter, I’ve not been able to get through a half gallon of cream in time.

Ah yes I see.. I’d be willing to bet that Weiland’s and probably Clintonville Natural Foods have Snowville cream in stock.
As for the half gallons of cream, I’ve found that it’s pretty stable past the sell by date (moreso than milk it would seem). I just end up making butter most of the time.. Butter freezes just fine and it’s very quick to make…
On the other hand quarts of the milk and cream would be nice for us bachelors.
Yeah, I was just talking about the “Heavy Whipping Cream’s” availability. Snowville in general is evermore common.
The poultry place in the North Market also sells Snowville milk.
North Market Poultry and Game.. They’re great too. They have pretty good eggs also, but I like the 2 silos a little better. I like that i can buy oddball stuff like whole rabbits and if i want i can get chicken or turkey bones for stock….

My favorite part about NM Poultry and Game is they will cut up a chicken for you. They do have the best chickens.

I would just like to say that my very good friend works for Snowville (she started after my love for Snowville began, just for the record) and expansion was part of their plan all along. Their goal, if I understand correctly, is to provide awesome milk at a price comparable to regular milk, and for less than their organic competitors. Furthermore, she has been to the milking barns lots of times and has pictures of the cows who live there, and knows their names. So I don’t think they are cutting corners or anything.
They would really rather be selling at stores than farmer’s markets.
Also you can buy the cream at Weiland’s and the Clintonville Giant Eagle.
YUM!!
one more thing…my friend says that the milk is delicious even after it’s past its prime – I haven’t tried it yet, but I have some expired in the fridge and I’m going to use it to make cheese. because cheese should be a little gamey.
Because I’ve taken a buttload of time off for the holidays, I’m going to wait until I have to go back before I try that…
