Norka Futon is Going Out of Business

By: Walker

Norka Futon, located at 780 North High Street in the Short North, is closing their doors on January 31st. The futon production factory in Akron and the other five locations throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania will remain open. The liquidation sale of all in-store merchandise at the Short North location is expected to begin shortly.

  • Maybe this is the city’s opportunity to start bringing a distinct identity back to the Short North.

  • I used to refer to futons as “croutons” from bad experience. :) Yes- you get what you pay for& I never knew a futon could actually be comfortable until trying out Norka’s. They also make their frames from organic/ sustainable wood and I believe were the only company in the country to do that- at least when they opened& for several years folowing. This was one of the reasons for the cost being higher than alot of people expected.  I think that any business that survived& even thrived during the late 80′s and for over 20 years in the Short North deserves nothing but respect.

  • I hate to see any business close and Norka seemed to offer quality products that were enjoyed by many people.  I wish them the best!

  • This is a bigger blow for the SN since it was one of the few places that sold something you need. At least there’s Furniture Underground up the street. Any speculation on how Roche Bobois is doing as an upscale furniture store?

  • you need futons?

    WTF did I do as a kid…

  • Yeah there is also Grandview Mercantile and Review, Funky and Functional, Flower Child and those two new spots on the north end.  We still have a lot of places to buy sofas.
