NHL Realignment Places Blue Jackets in Midwestern Conference

The National Hockey League Board of Governors announced last night that the NHL may be realigned into four regional conferences. The Columbus Blue Jackets had hoped to move into what was formerly known as theĀ EasternĀ conference, but instead will located in a yet-to-be-named “midwestern/central” conference that includes Detroit, Columbus, Chicago, St. Louis, Minnesota, Winnipeg and Dallas.

The realignment is expected to cut down on long-distance travel for away games, and help with changes in time zones for tv and radio broadcasts.

The realigned still requires a vote from the NHL’s Players’ Association. If approved, the new conferences would go into effect for next year’s 2012-2013 season.
