New Salon and Spa for Men Opens Downtown

Square One Salon and Spa is opening their first men’s salon, Square One Men, in their Columbus salon, located at 275 S. Fourth St. Co-Owner Doug Henderson explained that, with the expanding barber business in Columbus, he felt the market was right to offer men-exclusive services. Henderson commented that 40 percent of their existing clientele were men, so they knew it would be an easy transition to open a men’s salon.

Square One Men is aiming to answer the questions, “Who is not our client, and why aren’t they our client?” by offering services all men would find necessary and appealing. Hair cutting, beard grooming, neck shaves, waxing, gray blending color, and scalp treatments will all be offered in the men’s area.

Separated from the main salon and spa by a 1930s shoe-shine bench, the two spaces coexist inside the same building. With this arrangement, clients of Square One Men additionally have access to all of the salon services offered. Three stylists from the salon side will permanently move to the men’s side where they will work exclusively with those clients. Square One has an app available for customers to make appointments and check walk-in wait times.

To add to the environment of the space, clients are able to purchase the use of a whiskey locker. Available through silent auction, the lockers allow regular clients to have a key to a locked cabinet, labeled with their name, for storing their own liquor. During their appointments, the clients are able to access their lockers to pour themselves a drink to sip on while enjoying their services.

Aside from the whiskey lockers and shoe-shine services, another element that sets Square One apart from other salons is their community involvement. Part of the mission of the salon is “taking care of community,” and they accomplish this through several avenues. Henderson explained how connected with the community, specifically the German Village area, Square One is. The salon uses their resources, platform and recognizable brand to help others have a stronger voice in causes that are important to the salon. For example, the money from the whiskey locker silent auction will help provide clean water. They have also donated resources to various other charities throughout the area.

Square One Salon and Spa has a total of six locations around Ohio, and if the Columbus installment of the Square One Men shop goes well, they plan to move forward with constructing men’s salons in all of their locations.

Square One Men will host their grand opening party on May 19, with bourbon tastings, music, and a pop-up shop from Samson Men’s Emporium. The salon will open for business May 22.
