State sacks New Rome from its map

New Rome was stripped of its village status in 2004 and now is being removed from the state map.
Amen to that, said former New Rome Mayor Jamie Mueller, who ran for office in 2001 on the promise that he would try to bring down the village.
Mueller and his supporters long complained about the history of New Rome, which included thefts of thousands of dollars from the mayor’s court, poor record-keeping and a lack of public services. State auditors determined that the police were collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from traffic tickets just to support the department.
Mueller wouldn’t mind seeing other changes on the maps. For instance, he’s not really fond of the name Hilliard-Rome Road, he said. “They should change it to Hilliard-Prairie Road.”

haha, awesome.
I would love that.
New Rome was an embarassment and a disgrace.
About time, and if you’re a local you don’t need that website to know New Rome sucked, you just had to drive through it. Yuck.
WHAT
Tisler said the signs were stolen.
Prairie Township Trustee Steve Kennedy says that previous trustees asked the state to remove the village’s signs because business owners complained that they scared away potential customers.
I’ve never heard of anyone being frightened away just by the name of a town. I guess I have some serious research to do now.
Just read some of the stories on NewRomeSucks.com and you’ll understand why the town had such a bad rap.
The whole saga of New Rome is completely not funny and yet I find myself laughing hysterically whenever the subject comes up.
Does this make me evil?

James,
New Rome received national attention several times for having an utterly corrupt town government/police force. That does not send out the vibe of “come visit our wonderful village!”
NewRomeSucks.com is actually a relatively unimpressive website, that appears to be run by a bunch of goths (?). It does not do justice to the injustice that the city represented when it was in existence.

No wonder they want it off the map… I’d do anything to stop being harassed by a bunch of ghosts!
Oh wait, did you say ‘ghosts’ or ‘goths?’
Goths, just look at some of the pics from the “Goodbye to New Rome” parking lot party they had.
HAHAHAHAHA I just caught the irony of that … the Goths celebrate as Rome falls! Not so different from the “Old” Goths and “Old” Rome! Well, a few minor differences, perhaps … but still … I roffled.
Oh my god that’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard.
I take it back. You win.
