Trailer Roundup: New MacGyver, New Aliens, Old Jean-Claud Van Damme & More

As we head into the fall, there’s a lot of new films, tv shows and video games to look forward to. Each week, we bring you the latest trailers worth watching to get excited (or not so excited) about what’s coming soon across the cultural landscape. Here’s the latest and greatest:

    MacGyver

Does MacGyver need rebooted? No. Does that mean it’s happening? Yes. CBS is bringing the iconic character back to the small screen this fall with a younger actor and a shorter not-quite-mullet. Let’s hope that if the show lasts more than one season, he has time to grow that hair out in the back. Starts airing on September 23rd.

    Hands of Stone

The boxing biopics continue to flow with upcoming film “Hands of Stone”. This time, the story follows the real life events around Roberto Durán, who famously defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (played by musician Usher) in 1980. Watch for this one on August 26th.

    Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers

If you’re a fan of the current crop of Cartoon Network shows, you’re in luck. They’re all getting mashed together for a brawler that is getting a PS4 release on November 8th and hopefully other systems in the future. Choose your favorite fighter between Mordecai & Rigby, Finn & Jake, Gumball, Clarence, Steven Universe and the only dud of the group… Uncle Grandpa.

    Voyage of Time

If you like epic films, it doesn’t get more epic than the story of the birth, life and death of the known universe. The film will be released in two parts… one a 40-minute IMAX version (that you’ll probably be able to watch at COSI at some point) and a full length feature. Hits theaters on October 7th.

    Metal Gear Survive

Konami returns to the world of Metal Gear for the first time without series creator Hideo Kojima, and so far, fans are reacting pretty poorly to the trailer. The game takes place in an alternate dimension where our hereos will be fighting zombies instead of humans. Because we don’t have enough zombies in our pop-culture right now.

Same Kind of Different as Me

Renée Zellweger, Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou star in what critics are already hailing as the most offensive “magical negro” film since Disney’s Song of the South. The Guardian ripped the trailer a new one for all kinds of valid reasons. You’ll have to wait until February 3rd to see if the film is as bad as the trailer makes it out to be.

    Arrival

The aliens have landed, and it’s up to Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker to figure out why they’re here and what they want. The plot is one that’s not totally unique, but the dramatic trailer makes it look like it has more in common with Prometheus rather than Independence Day. Scheduled for a November 11th release.

    Jean-Claude Van Johnson

Jean-Claud Van Damme, also known as Belgium’s Chuck Norris, returns to the realm of self-referential roles (remember 2008’s JCVD?) in new Amazon series Jean-Claude Van Johnson. The new show is a comedy, poking fun at the world of washed up movie stardom, a la BoJack Horseman. You can watch the pilot episode now, streaming on Amazon.

    Battlefield 1

New WWI shooter Battlefield 1 got a new trailer during Germany’s Gamescom event last week, showcasing new footage from the upcoming game. It’s due out on PS4, Xbox One and PCs on October 21st.

    The Good Neighbor

A group of asshole kids decide to harass an old man with technology and hidden cameras to make him think he has a case of the ghosts. Things don’t go according to plan. James Caan is super creepy, and you can let him creepy you out too on September 16th.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

The Fractured but Whole is the much-anticipated sequel to South Park’s The Stick of Truth, which is arriving on PS4, Xbox One and PCs on December 6th. This time around, the kids are playing superhereos rather than their medieval fantasty RPG, and looks to be another great outing for fans of crude humor and twenty years of episode references.

    Allied

Brad Pitt heads back to World War II with a less crazy accent than what he had in Inglorious Basterds. This time, he teams up with Marion Cotillard to take a German official, but their love story goes awry. This one is directed by Robert Zemeckis and headed to theaters on November 23rd.

    I.T.

Successful business man Pierce Brosnan pisses off an I.T. guy at his company who turns out to be a deranged computer hacker who decides to make life miserable for “the man”. The whole thing turns into a suspense thriller where each opposing force decides they need to kill the other. Coming to theaters on September 23rd.

    Resident Evil 7

Interested in a peek at what the gameplay will look like in Resident Evil 7? Well, Capcom is giving you what you want in an extended three minute “trailer” that shows the new game’s return to the survival horror genre. The game will see a release on January 24th, 2017 on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

    Madden 17

Your new roster update for Madden is coming soon. Tomorrow, in fact. Madden 17 drops for Playstation 3, 4, Xbox 360 and One on Tuesday, August 23rd.
