Just thought I’d throw it out there to anyone looking for a house in the Harrison West area. The house is two down from mine on Pennsylvania Ave has been 100% remodeled including new roof, siding, hardwood floors, paint (inside and out), new roof and siding on the garage as well and I’m sure a bunch of other stuff. They have been working on it since i moved into my house last Aug. I don’t know the people who own it but I talked to the guy while doing yard work on sunday and he said as soon as they get the new door in it’s going on the market. I’m not sure if it’s listed anywhere online yet or not.
if your not familiar with the Harrison West area it’s pretty much the same area as Victorian Village. Takes me a 6 dollar cab ride to anywhere in the arena district and is walking distance to goodale park and OSU (but not campusy at all!) Most people that live around me are young professionals, lots of people in scrubs all the time so docs or nurses I guess.
anyway, just a heads up to anyone looking to move to a great area.

Having lived in Harrison west for the last 5 years there are a few issues with the neighborhood. It is still gentrifying. During my stay, I have moved in the last 6 months, I had 2 bikes stolen, lawn equipement stolen, 3 break in attempts (I now have a big dog!), homeless sleeping on my patio 3 times, yadda yadda yadda. This is still very much an urban enviroment, do not think you are moving to grandview.
I live across the street from the originally mentioned house going on the market. I have been inside it during the construction and they have done it up right! Opened up the floor plan, everything inside is new, it will be a great addition to our street.
As for the neighborhood, I have lived in Harrison West for 3 years and have had ZERO problems with crime. No car break-ins or anything. Yes, it is an urban neighborhood, you will see homeless people. If you leave a bike unchanged on your front porch, it may be stolen. I attend the monthly neighborhood meetings and our local police officer says every month that HW is safer then VV or IV due to the fact that we don’t have a “High Street” and all of that foot traffic. We have very few reported crimes a month.
thatsmydog – I am sorry that you have had these negative experiencs. Were the break-in attempts recent?
I moved shortly after the 3rd breakin attempt. The bikes were in the garage and the thiefs broke in. My neighbor, a women was seriously assulted, and she believe would have been raped, about a year ago if she was not able to pretend to call the police on her cell phone. Oh there is lots of crime in HW.
I have a few friends who live in HW and will agree with thatsmydog. It’s a neighborhood that is still gentrifying, but is really moving in the right direction.
That said, one friend just witnessed a purse snatching last week, and had a drug-related shooting happened next door about 2 years ago. It’s not without crime, but it’s definitely not Weinland Park either.
A little common sense and awareness goes a long way in any neighborhood; be it rural, suburban, or urban.
I agree with Brewmaster. My gf had her purse snatched while in the parking lot of a Kroger in Powell. Just some punk Dublin kids. You should always be mindful of your surroundings and do everything possible to minimize your chances of getting broken into, like secure doors and windows, good night time lighting, etc. I mean, I’ve had my car broken into almost everywhere I’ve lived (campus, clintonville, german village). You just have to learn to minimize your chances of being a victim…..
WOW what street are you on? and how far south? I have not had any problems at all and I forget to lock my door all the time :P
I would think the officer would know that more people on the streets at all times makes for a safer environment. He should visit Toronto sometime. Tons of “High Streets” yet even with a population of 2.5 million they had 79 homicides in 2005 and that was a 28% increase from ’04. We have less than half that population, but we have around 100 a year. I wouldn’t be surprised that over here it is harder to keep an eye on lots of people when so much of the city is spread out and low-density. Of course that is only one aspect of crime, but they have others on page 10 if you’d like to compare.

I’d like to see where we are regarding traffic related deaths and injuries compared to a city with lots of mass transit. I’m sure we’ll see that mass transit would save lots of lives.
I moved to H-West almost two years ago and couldn’t be happier with the neighborhood. At the time, I was coming from Cincinnati and didn’t anything about Columbus. Due to work, I had to make a quick decision to come here and didn’t have time check everything out. I grabbed the first apartment I looked at. Now the apartment kind of sucks, but I’ve stayed with it because the neighborhood is incredible.
Location-wise, It’s got to be the most convenient neighborhood in Columbus. I can walk to Gooddale, the Short North, Ohio Stadium, and the Arena Distict. I’m less than 10 minutes from work downtown. I can jump on the bike path for a quick ride to Antrim Lake or Worthington. Wish we had a liquor store though. If anyone needs a suggestion for a new business idea, that’s it. Open a liquor store in Harrison West.
As far as crime, I’ve had no problems what so ever. I haven’t even heard of any, except somebody snatching purses at B-Hampton’s and Zeno’s (two great neighborhood bars).
I’m not a big Zenos person because that place smells :? B-hamptons is alright though. And the closest booze shop is on 5th ave next to the burger king, so not very far.
I to have not seen the crime that some others have posted about. I am still wondering what part (location) of Harrison West they lived in.
Zeno’s smells because they don’t enforce the smoking ban. I’m an ex-smoker, but it doesn’t bother me to be around it. I tried their pizza for the first time the other night and was surprised at how good it was. Their burgers kind of suck though. Had breakfast last Saturday at the new Cafe Corner–very good as well.
Yeah…I know about that liquor store on 5th, but I just hate having to drive anywhere. Love the walkability of the neighborhood.
aye cafe corner is great.
The Corner Bros. make great sammiches!
Hey t1pp-
If you can WALK to the Short North….Europia is now a full-service liquor stor!

I moved into Harrison West last year and haven’t had any issues. I’ve even left the garage door open by mistake. The only problem I’ve experienced is the house next to mine disappeared after a backhoe showed up one day.
I’ll add my vote for Café Corner as well.
Cafe Corner gets another recommendation.
Cafe Corner = Cafe Apropos???
No, two different places. But they are both on 3rd and only a block away from each other.
Yeh I bolted from HW after the guy was murdered on the corner of 2nd and Perry. Too much reality for me.
The murder was a result of something that happened at Outland. It could happen at any neighborhood bar. That being said, the bar and the trouble it brought is gone. On Perry Street, 25 new homes have been sold in the new Harrison Park Place, at an average price of $386,000 each. Harrison West has come a long way in the 3 years since that murder.
