Cleveland-area expatriates rejoice! You now have one more way of getting your pierogi fix here in Columbus, thanks to a new food truck that specializes in these Polish dumpings.
Sophie’s Gourmet Pierogi is the name of the latest food truck to emerge on the scene, which officially launched yesterday. For owner Stephen Redzinak, the launch has been a long time coming.
“My grandmother sat me on the counter as a little boy and introduced me to the world of good food,” he explains. “I built my career as a Navy cook, restaurant cook and corporate chef for the last 20 years and always dreamed of doing my own thing.”
Those dreams began to materialize for Redzinak when his corporate chef position came to an end, and a food truck became available for his new business venture.
“Everyone else is doing tacos, but I want to do something different,” he says. “My culinary background is very diverse, so I wanted to create a truck that was rooted in pierogi, but branches off into other cultures and styles.”
Redzinak describes his creation as “gastrogi”, a blend of gastronomy and pierogi. For example, an Italian variation includes tomato confit, fresh basil, asiago cheese and compound butter. Other variations include vegetarian options, and the truck will also be serving up italian ice as a cool treat.
You can find the Sophie’s Gourmet Pierogi truck at the intersection of Kenny & Lane Avenues on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, at Dinin’ Hall on Monday, and at Columbus Commons on Thursdays.

Is the name a Sophie’s Choice pun?
No, Sophie was the name of his grandmother.
There is a ‘Sophie’s Choice’ pierogi and dumpling truck in Cleveland, is that what you are talking about joev?
Gonna have to disagree with the statement that ‘everyone else is doing tacos’.
I always wonder why pierogi are described as being from Poland. They are an Eastern European dish. My German grandmother made them, and my brother and I make them on occasion, and we are not Polish or from Cleveland.
Via Wikipedia: “The Pierogi, originates from Poland, sometime in the 13th century.”

Anyone know if they are at Kenny and Lane today (Wednesday)? Thinking of stopping by to check it out.
I would like apricot pierogis please. We used to get them from the West Side Market when I was growing up but no one there makes them anymore. They were the absolute best.
@bucki12 – I just thought it was a pun. I didn’t know about the truck in Cleveland. I would have had lots of respect for a pun involving a 30-year-old cultural reference.
