The forte of the Brown Bag Deli involves sandwiches, which it does as well as anyplace else.

Yet the German Village establishment has begun adding one or two daily entree specials to the lineup of soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts — available for eating in the funky space and for carrying out.

The deli does soups ($3.25 a cup, $4.25 a bowl) well, without pretense. A case in point: tomato, artichoke and leek, with the chunky ingredients in a straightforward, low-fat broth with nothing but tasty flavors.

  • I will be sad when Bakery Gingham moves. Although I am happy that it is doing so well!

  • I love love LOVE Brown Bag! You know what, I’m going there for lunch. It’s decided. :-)

  • I just have to say, Brown Bag is really hit or miss. We went again yesterday, and had surly service and not great sandwiches. (out of stock items, multiple missing ingredients on sandwiches.) I’ve been really happy about half the time, and really disappointed the other half.

Even though it’s a few blocks from my house, I’ll probably be going to Cafe Corner when I have a hankering for a big sandwich. The menu there is just a lot more inspired, and I don’t feel like I’m inconveniencing anyone when I order a sandwich.

  • I love Brown Bag.

    A LOT.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine and I were in there. He forgot his sunglasses on the table. We were all the way down the street to Jager when one of the guys who works there caught up with us to return them.

    That’s service.

Also I love the food. Spice of Life FTW!

  • man do I love Brown Bag, I can’t wait to try the brisket!
