Earlier today, Mayor Coleman and other city officials announced plans to update the 2002 Downtown Business Plan and to hold a series of public town hall meetings to help move forward with the next phase of urban development in Columbus. At that event it was also unveiled that a new apartment building will be coming soon to the southeast corner of Gay Street and Grant Avenue near CCAD. The building will be home to 68 apartment units housing 136 new Downtown residents.
Rents will range from $760/mo for single units, $1,250/mo for double units and $1,740/mo for triple units, and will be targeted as student housing for CCAD, CSCC, Franklin and Capital Law. The building is slated for completion August 1st, 2011.
Larger renderings are below:

Currently, there’s a 3-story building on this site that houses students. A shame to see it go, but I think a 7-story building built for student housing is a good replacement.
love it! but i hate the “lofts” sign integrated into the overhang….
i mean, i’m all for development…but really, we have so many parking lots downtown, let’s get rid of one of those rather than a building that already houses people. Ah well, i don’t know the specifics.
another flat lot gone (edit – didn’t see Walker’s post, Google maps shows a flat lot on the SE corner)
this, along with the rental units at Grant and Broad, the CCAD Design Square apartments, and the Edwards Neighborhood launch along Gay, there’s a lot of potential life coming to this section of downtown.
exciting news!

Here’s the building I’m talking about:

Unfortunately, that approach only works in Sim City. ;)
^ so it’s 1/2 a loss of a building, 1/2 a loss of flat lot. for the most part, i am willing to accept this (and I know they were eagerly awaiting my stamp of approval before moving forward)
Seems like its for the better overall
So long Crackhouse, you will be missed by many a fine art student… But, really? My apartment three blocks away is half of their price for the single unit. Unless their single unit is large enough for four people, they’ll see little support from CCAD, or any, students.
Also, the LOFTS sign is tacky.
oh ive been in that building…. its a mess, trust me no loss. its a shame to demolish an old structure but its a mess. CCAD students used to call that place the “crackhouse”.

I’ve heard that CCAD’s Design Square Apartments (dorms) are pretty expensive, and they seem to be having no problem filling those up.
I agree that the price structure may seem a little steep for the average student, but when you’re providing 136 beds to an area with 30,000+ students, I don’t think you need to set your prices at the average level. Demand has always been much greater than Supply when it comes to student-oriented housing in this area.
excellent news, i’m guessing there hasn’t been any estimated date for construction to start since none was mentioned?
Its always nice to see new afordable apartments downtown. With all the new residential popping up in that area, I wonder if the homeless shelter nearby will magically move.
@urbanapp – there’s actually more new housing for low-income and homeless coming to that area. the Commons at Buckingham is being built next to I-670 and is only about 6-7 blocks away:

Unless the existing structure is beyond repair, and I’m guessing that’s not the case since it’s inhabited, why aren’t we building this on one of the many asphalt lots nearby? It’s just wasteful. This stretch is one of the last remnants of the historic neighborhood that used to stand here.
Love the project…Retail on the 1st floor????..I have to say this city loves to tear down buildings! STOPPPPPPPPPP
over on the messageboard Walker posted a link to a Dispatch photo of the corner of Gay and 3rd in 1927 and then in 1928.

I do have to wonder if back in 1927 people lamented the loss of the Pharisee Tire building that was replaced by the Ohio State Savings Association Building?
I Like both buildings…Just saying..lets fill up the lots before we start blasting away buildings. Shame on Columbus! Dont get me wrong..for once I love this project.
Somebody finally figured out that there needs to be more apartment units around CCAD and CSCC…..it’s about time.
Just wondering why there are not more apartments for students in the King Lincoln Area? Seems a lot of the CCAD/CSCC students choose to live up by OSU.
I guess probably the nightlife and events?
